When I was in labour with Harrison I was reccomended I had an epidural, as I was 'at risk' of having needed an emergency c-section.

So I decided striaght away that I was going to have an epidural.

With Louis, I was 8.5cm dilated when I asked for an epidural but I was told I was too far gone to have one.

How dilated were you when you had an epidural?

i was 4cm dilated the reason i had it so early into the labour was beacuse i wasnt dilating very fast and had been stuck on 4cm for hours and hours so they suggested stronger pain relief xxx

Oh yes, i loved it..not when it went in...ouch. anyways, i was 4 cm dilated for almost up to the ten hours and that was it..i came in 4 dilated and got it at 4 dilated. i wanted to wait to see if i can handle it but it was distressing and it was getting late so i wanted to sleep..and i got it! yay..had a good rest before giving birth the next morning.

I think you have to be over 2.5cm dilated before they give you one, and i think they wont give you one after 6 cm dilation.  Dont quote me on that one cos im not sure, I know i asked for one at 2cm and got told i couldnt have one and after 19 hours i was ready to punch her out...she let me have one at 3 cm which was sooooooo nice of her (really didnt like her lol)

I think Steph is right you have to be between certain cm's dilated to early and you will have to have it topped up too many times or it will ware off and too late and it will block you feeling to push or not work in time.

I wasn't dilated at all as I had a csection.  I never had an epidural with my natural labours.

I had an epidural at 8 cms as my labour had stalled and had made no progress in hours, and eventually had an emergency c-section
