hi, i've reached that point in the pregnancy that means i would do anything to have the baby now thanks to the spd i've been suffering from. i need help please.

i'm on huge pain relief which warrants having me and lo in transitional care ward after delivery but sadly the pain relief isn't working at the mo, but i refuse to up it. i think as the bubba drops down my pelvis and hips are getting worse. i can't really weight bear at the mo due to the pain, but feel stuck with having to wait at until the clinic at the hosp, on tues.

i had a sweep last weds and engaged in the midwifery approved activities (if you know what i mean!) which led me to be in agony but no onset of labour. the things i'll do to get this one out. it's daft really as she's my second baby but there is 6 yrs between this one and her sis. i might as well be a first time mum!

i spent a few days having shows and was informed at the sweep i was one cm dilated and although cervix was thick i was at -2. i know the mw felt lo head and i guess with having shows i must have dilated more but now zilch! i'm fed up at 39 wks and clinic will only be making plan for induction. i guess that means i won't get that done on the same day will i? i'll be honest i don't want to be induced. does anyone know whether i will have more pain in labour because of the spd or will it be just the labour pain i'll have? the pain at the mo is so bad like i said i don't want to weight bear and i'm far from successful with it anyway so my plan to keep mobile is somewhat scuppered. my medical team vary from you can go up to 10/14 days overdue then we'll induce or the consultant who will make a plan on tues but nonetheless i've been brought up to full term despite the level of suffering.

please can anyone advise me what to expect and what to do. i can't take anymore pain like this.

Hi. I'm so sorry to hear you're in so much pain. I didn't have SPD but I was induced so I can give you an idea of what thats like. Something else that may be of use to you is that we have a Buddy Scheme where you can be put in touch with Mums on here who have experienced SPD. Click HERE to read about it.

I was induced at 39 weeks because of high blood pressure. I went for a consultants appt at 38 weeks, and he would have done it the next day but I asked for a week to see if I could go into labour myself.

On the morning of induction, I had to be in the hospital for 7.30am. I was given a bed and a mw gave me the 1st pessary straight away. I was really bothered that this would hurt, but although it was uncomfortable, it didn't hurt. They use a gell called prostin (it has a longer name too) which softens the cervix and helps it to dilate. I had a warm sensation whilst it melted and I had to lay down for 30 mins.

If the 1st pessary doesn't bring labour on, you can have up to 2 more and if your cervix dilates enough, the mw will usually break your waters to speed things along. For me, the induction failed as my DD had un-engaged herself and shoved her head into my hip but induction is usually very sucessfull. It can make the contractions happen more quickly and it can be uncomfortable but usually, the labour is quicker when induced.

Take care, and please keep us posted.

Hi hun! Sorry you feel this way. You know full well I understand all you are going through from our previous chats and I feel for you with all my heart. I so wish I could take just some of that pain from you. I think you are doing so well coping. I never made it past 38 weeks. I did push for an induction but lo wasnt ready so ignored all attempts made to get him out and I failled to dilate at all. I also had a pain free ap of only 12 cm which was making the idea of labour scary. I even needed gas and air to open my legs for the prostaglandin.

If you read my SPD article there is info on there as to how to cope with SPD during labour. Also see pelvic partnership and or babycentre for more info. PM me if you need anything else as I have more links I'm sure.

Make sure you are 100% comfortable with everything being done and ask for explanations of anything you arent sure of. Make sure your partner is aware of your limits so he can help argue your side if needed. Make sure any mw or consultant is aware of your condition and its limitations as soon as they come in the room. Try to avoid stirups and be very aware of your pain free gap if you have an epidural. (Dont feel you cant have one, just remember you wont feel how much pressure you are putting your hips under.)

Most importantly keep in mind the end result. You are going to have a fantastic little baby to hold at the end of all this and believe me it will be worth it all!

Sending huge gentle cyber hugs your way!

Oh I've just had another thought. When you have your dilation checked, prostaglandin inserted or anything else that involves feeling 'up there' ask for a midwife who can do it while you are on your side as it reduces the opening of your legs. Also request gas and air whilst they do it. It worked for me.

I had a mild case of spd with my second baby. Both of my labours were so diffrent the first i had pre eclampsea ( not spelled correctly) so i was indused and the labour laster only 2h and i didnt get any pain relief.

My second labour the one i had spd i went into labour my self 1week late my labour was so painfull i had gas and air, morfen too. The mid wife said i should try to go on my knees to ease the pain and omg that was a bad idea for me. i found it easer to just lie on my back my labour laster 12h this time.  lol at one point my Hd had to hold my legs as i couldnt move in pain

I dont know if the amount of pain i had in my second was due to the Spd

I wish i could tell you that it will be fine and pain free lol but for me it was sore and i wont lie to you

good luck with it all eat plenty curys there is some kind of tea. i was told the best way is sex as its the same as a sweep but i was in to much pain for it as i think you are

xxxx

thanks for all the help.

here is the update. on tues i saw the consultant (from another team!) and i put it forward that the end of the road had been reached. i had an exam to see if my cervix was favourable and lo and behold it is. i had a sweep the week b4 and followed it up with the usual but all it gave me was pain +++. anyhow, i had dilated another cm so she did a sweep and said it wouldn't take alot to break my waters. i said go on then but she didn't. anyhow it is thought i'll only need one pessary and the bubba's head is low so who knows. she went off and booked the induction and i have to call the delivery unit tomorrow (19th) at 06.30 to see what time i'm to go in.

i am scared as i don't know if i'll just have the pain of labour or that and spd pain. whatever is planned i am not going to go on my back. i'm adamant of that. god knows whether i will be allowed to have the pain relief i'm having at the mo, or wil the decision be made that the recovery must have happened. i don't know how that will be.

i will be back in contact post bubba. the plan is that i/we are supposed to be staying in for a few days to check that they will be no w'drawls for her, or if so they will treat her and then we can come out.

thanks again for hugs and support

Well done you, if only all hospitals were as understanding! I had to switch hospitals before i could get an induction date, the new hospital wanted me in next day but it was fully booked so they booked me in for 41wks but i went in at 40+3 in labour...

I found that leaning on the back of the bed with just a small gap between the legs was really comfy, gravity took its course and baby was forcing the dilation a lot faster that way...Any good mw will ask if you are comfortable opening your legs before they assume you can prop them up on them and push!!

A birthing ball is also a brill way of bringing baby right down to aid dilation, and its good fun...it didnt really hurt as much as i thought it would! I sat on that thing from 3cms to 8cms and i had a bit of gas n air whilst rocking on it!

Here's hoping that you have a really easy birth! Good luck xxxxxx
