I had an ERPC on Thursday last week (evacuation of retained products of conception - or D&C) and wondered if anyone else who has had this can say how long it was before their periods returned and what they were like?

The hospital have said it probably be 4 to 6 weeks, and that they can be a bit different to start with i.e. heavier and different lengths and I just wondered what your experiences were.

I'm thinking about charting my cycle again, just to see whats going on really and I'm not sure when would be the best time to start.

Would appreciate any advice.

I was told that to be able to say you were having a period you had to have stopped bleeding after the erpc for at least 2wks.

I started charting about 5 days afterwards because it helped me to know what was going on in my body.  I bought the book "Taking charge or your fertility" if you want to borrow it I will post it to you it is very good.  I ovualated 19 days after my erpc.  On day 5, day 10 and day 14 I took opk's to see if the pregnancy hormone had left my body as it can take a little while, by day 14 I had a completely negative opk and then ovulated 5 days later.  My period came on day 31 after the erpc.

My first 2 periods after the procedure were very differnent to any I have ever experienced including after having given birth.  The first one was very crampy and uncomfortable and I had a lot of large blood clots and felt like crap, also be prepared for the emotional side of how you will feel about this first period.  The second one wasn't so bad cramps wise but I still had blood clots by the 3rd period they were more or less back to normal.
