I was on the verge of giving up breastfeeding Ethan (he was about 6 days old) as I found it so painful when a midwife suggested I tried it lying down, and that cracked it for me. Once I'd got used to doing it this way, I then was able to sit up and know what was right position wise from there. I just wish I'd been advised to try it earlier, but the only help I got was from midwives pinching and poking my breasts into his mouth, which I found neither helpful or dignified. Prior to that, no-one had even mentioned that you could do it lying down, and it hadn't occurred to me - why would it if no-one mentioned it? For all the talk about breastfeeding being the most natural thing in the world, it is also a skill that you and your baby have to learn, and I find it shocking that there isn't a lot of support to help women with this, other than constantly telling them that 'breast is best', which is actually of no practical help at all.

The article is really interesting.  I fed lying down a lot- I think it is a really natural position, as well as the baby getting a good feed the mum gets a rest too.  I fed this way all the time at night, it meant I wasn't too disturbed and when the sleepy night hormones kicked in during night feeds I could just slide my babies back into their cot and you then slide into a deeper sleep than you would do if you're up making up a bottle.

I fed Ben lying down at night in Hospital, so I could rest too. The midwife helped me the first few times to get comfy and to make sure he was safe. At home I tended to feed him sat up, except when at 4 months he was feeding all night and I was falling asleep sitting up! I decided to lay down with him so we could both get sleep and this worked. Managed to get him into his own bed againg too. Really helped me, I tihnk I'd have given up! Even though others said not to bring Ben into bed, it helped me loads.
