Hi everyone, I just joined about 3 minutes ago so I'm trying to figure out how everything works exactly. My name is Carey, I'm 24 and mommy to a 3-year-old boy. I'm engaged to a wonderful, wonderful man. His name is Nick and we just decided a few weeks ago that we want to begin ttc. I am currently on birth control. I have one more week on this pack and than I will be coming off. I've been trying to do some research on gender selection and all that good stuff. We would both love to try for a girl this time. He also has a 3-year-old boy from a previous marriage. I'm very excited but I'm nervous to think how long it could take with coming off birth control. Anyone who's done this before, their comments and experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks so much for letting me join the forum. Looking forward to being able to get to know you ladies!!

I can't give you any words of wisdom as to gender selection, I really believe that's all down to chance, but I know some people try to change their diet and so on to try to influence it. Good luck with ttc and hopefully it won't take you too long!

Hi, welcome to Madmums. The best way to try and concieve for a specific gender and to also work out when your cycles are back to normal after birth control is to chart your cycles. A very good book that has clear instructions on how to chart and gender select is "Taking charge of your fertility" by Toni Weschler MPH.
The method of gender selection that is commonly used is called the Shettles method if you do a search in google it will throw up loads of pages. It is known that sperm that determines a girl lives longer than sperm that determines a boy so basically once you have worked out your cycle accurately and are confident about your dates every month you have sex up to 3 days before you ovulate and then stop. The theory being male sperm will have died off before the egg is released giving a better chance for female sperm to reach the egg.

Thank you ladies for all the awesome responses! Also MumSam, thanks for all the info. I've read a bit on the Shettles Theory... makes sense. We will be happy with whatever gender we do happen to conceive, but it will be interesting giving gender selection a chance and seeing what happens!!! I will definitely keep you updated.

Hi and welcome to madmums. I'm Jennie, a single mum to 4 lovely kids and have my 5th due in just less than 12 weeks. I cant say much about gender selection, I've never tried it but I guess it it possible for some theories to work. I currently have 3 girls and a boy and am expecting another boy this time. Good luck in TTC and hope it doesn't take too long for you.

Like everyone else says its up to chance but not that you can plan this perfectly but you can try and plan male sperms living for around 3 to 5 days and female sperm can live up to 7 days. Soo what ive done with my children have sex 4 days before you ovulate . More than likely there will be more female sperm than male sperm. But like everyone says you cant bank on that because either your taking a chance on no sperm being around when you ovulate or having either. but my doctor once told me if you have sex the day you ovulate your chances of a boy are high because males swim really fast and last less. and females swim slow and are around longer. Hope this helps.
