DP has expressed concerns tonight that Edward will be 'one of these kids who always has a cough'. It is true that esspecially at night he coughs alot. Not enough to wake him or make him ill but he does have these coughing fits.

I've always put it down to dribbling and saliva before as he always was a very dribbly baby and still does more so that some toddlers.

I did everything right in pregnancy quitting smoking straight away and breastfeeding for 11 months. DP still smokes and we take him to our local a couple of times a week, I try and keep him in the no smoking section but he tends to follow daddy when he goes through for a fag.

Is this overreacting? Do your lo's cough a lot or should I mention it? He has had quite a lot of colds through the winter although hes never had a chest infection. Neither DP or I have asthma.

Hi madz..since kaitlyn was born, she drooled more than other babys i have noticed and she came down with the resp virus when she had the coughing for almost a week and couldnt breath well from. since then, her lungs has built a sensitivity as an asthma person would, especially just going through alot of the colds, their lungs would develop much differently and can very well develop asthma though mommy or daddy would never have it. i would definately get a full screening of his lungs. its just a sensitivity to chemical or whatever is in the air that can trigger spasms and just alot of coughs..hope this may help. im in the same boat watching katie very closely from now on as well but she hasnt coughed for 2 months so far...good news. plus, she has her breathing treatment as an asthma person has just incase she does start to cough again. good luck mads!

Hiya madz,

I'd definitely mention it to your doctor hun as a persistant night time cough can sometimes be a sign of asthma.. it's not to say your lo actually has it, it might just be a case of prescribing some Alupent (sp?) to help open the airways at night.. Apparently lying down can sometimes narrow them which can cause the cough.  My Megan ahd a sever dose of RSV (like Lina's Kaitlyn) when she was only 3wks old and they told me that she may be left with a weakness and at a higher risk of asthma (especially as hubby has bad hay fever).. fortunately though.  She did develop a night time cough when she was about a year old an a couple of months on the alupent did the trick, other than a cold going straight to her chest she has no more symptoms.. she's now 4.5!  you're lo might be the same hun, but it's best to get it chesked out - just in case!

Take care hun,

I was expecting people to say it was normal...

I'll make him a gp appt. He seems fine in himself otherwise.

Hi babe i would have i would have it looked at. Neither of my girls are like this. When they get a cough i use tixy liyx however its spelt lol. This always seems to do the trick. I would try and keep him from following daddy when he wants a fag.

I hope you get to the bottom of this hun and i hope its nothing more than just a cough. xxxxx

I was thinking it may be an allergy.

He isnt exposed to smoke loads - in fact hardly at all. Our house is 100% no smoking and its only rarely he is in the smoking side of the pub. I'm quite strict about it as since quitting myself I hate the smell of it. My parents dont smoke and neither do my close friends.

I have mild hayfever but no other allergys and neither does dp. However my brother had mild infant asthma (hes grown out of it now) and a penicilin allergy so it might be worth getting it checked. I need to see the GP for me anyway so I'll make a double appt.

Its gone on for too long now though and I have made another appointment as I am sure there is something else

Let me know how you get on at the docs
