Do any of you have any experience of Hyperemesis (severe nausea and vomiting) during their pregnancy. The reason I ask is a friend of my mums has just been diagnosed and she's very poorly. She looks very frail and just cant eat. The doctors have prescribed meds but are considering hospitalisation if it doesnt get better. She is really upset and wants to know what she can do to help and if it will get better. I have no experience but mum thought I could ask you guys.

Any help much appreciated.

I can't remember the medical terms given to me during my first pregnancy, but I do remember having severe nausea and fatigue in the first 12 weeks. I was told it was normal at first, but when it got to the stage I couldn't hold down water or stay away or do anything without needing to rest they did prescribe medication, and suggested a few days in hospital, although I just tried the medication first. One day I woke up and it had all completely stopped. It was one of the horribliest feelings, there one day and disappeared the next.

How far in the pregnancy is she?

I have had 2 hyperemesis pregnancies, and am on my 3rd now at 15 weeks. It really is a dreadful illness, I am on medication, and have also been admitted to hospital recently for 7 bags of fluid and anti-emetic injections. I really do reccomend going in for rehydration if she needs it, if she is dehydrated then the pills will not work.

What medication is she on, do you know? And what doses? There are lots of meds out there for HG and most you can take in combination with other meds and are safe in pregnancy.

I have plenty of information on HG, if you want any more info on it, please PM me and I'll do my best to help your mum's friend.

A girl I used to work with had this too and she had to spend some time in hospital for re-hydration. Although it was horrible having to go into hospital, she felt so much better for it.

I had it with my daughter from about 5wks pregnant I didnt realise I was pregnant untill I was 7wks gone I thought I just had a really bad stomach bug. I was really bad with it I couldnt even keep water down. I was hospitalised when I was 8wks gone they put me on a drip and gave me a anti sickness injection they also gave me a scan aswell and found everything was ok I think that was just to check I wasnt having twins which can be a cause of bad sickness. I was in hospital for about a week. I felt alot better after that but I still felt sick untill the end of my pregnancy but no where near as bad as I did before. I have heard you are more likely to have a girl if you suffer with hyperimeses me and my mum both had hyperimeses and we both had girls. I hope your mums friend is feeling much better soon and good luck with the rest of her pregnancy. I hope this helps.

That's just a myth I'm afraid, I have done extensive reading on hyperemesis, and I also help with an international support group for HG, and there are an equal number of girl and boy HG pregnancies some had it worse with a girl and some had it worse with a boy. The thing is because so little (especially in the UK) is known about it, there are many theories thrown about but none have been proven.

I have two girls, and I don't know what this one is yet, but HG is debilitating regardless of the sex.
