Is there anything you can do to help your child avoid a cold? Ella has had a cold for about a week and a half and over the past 2 days has been feeling really sorry for herself. I've been to the doctors this morning and low and behold, she has an ear infection - again. She has a problem with her ears called Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (read all about it here!) which although has improved greatly, she is still prone to fluid backing up in her ears. So, when she gets a cold its more likely to back up in the ear and become infected.

I know that there has been a news article recently about echinacea reducing your chances of getting a cold, and I know that you can get children's echinacea suitable for over 2s. But, it also contains extra vitamins such as C. Ella currently has haliborange multi vits (as she's not the best eater!) and having checked with the pharmacist, the echinacea on top would be too much vitamin C.

She's really not happy today. The nurse took her temperature, gave her some calpol and it didn't come down so shes asked me to monitor her her temp every hour and call her every 2 hours! It has started to come down now, but obviously its not nice seeing her like this.

Does anyone know if there is anything you can do to help prevent against a cold in children?

I don't really know that there is a great deal that you can do. Unfortunately kids are regular little germ machines, and with her seeing plenty of other kids, it's inevitable that she'll get whatever they've all got. Having said that, it might be worth asking the pharmacist specifically as I know tharer are adult 'cold prevention packs' on the market now, and it might be that you can adapt it for a child. Otherwise just basic hygeine. Maybe get some antibac wipes and make sure her hands are properly clean before she eats and after her nappy is done. You could send these to nursery too. Poor little Ella Belle. Send her big hugs from me xxx

Not sure there is a great deal you can do if she is already having a multi vit.  Zinc and Vit C is what is recommended to fight off a cold which should both be in a good multi vit.  Fresh air and plenty to drink is the only other thing you can do.  Echinacea is meant to be good and my sil swears by it, is there not a child one without the vit c on the market? Dark grean, red and yellow veg and fruit is meant to be very good too.  Yoghurt is also meant to help prevent colds.  Don't cover mouth or nose with hands when she sneezes as the germs cling to hands encourage her to use a tissue instead, so washing hands a lot can help.  Colds and viruses are spread by direct contact so from the hands to the face.  Give Ella a squidge from us!!
