Hi. When I was in hospital after having my daughter, the lady in the next bed to me had a situation where her daughter wouldn't feed. The baby was put on a drip to keep her hydrated and after a day or so, she started to feed normally. I don't know how long they kept her in but on the day I left, the baby was feeing properly and had poo'd.

Most newborns lose weight once they're born, this can be up to 10% - so in your niece's case, about 11 lbs. My daugther lost about 12% of her birth weight, but once we'd sorted her feeding out she soon started to gain again.

Really hope that the hospital can give your sister some answers. Thinking of you all and hope that your niece is ok soon. Please do let us know how she gets on.

I havent had ay experience of this but your niece is in the right place. Newborns often loose weight, as Dizie said, and learning to feed is difficult, esspecially if baby is particually sleepy.

Good luck and please keep us updated.

I wouldn't worry too much.  She is in the right place.  My last son lost over 1lb when he was a few days old.  As has been said all babies lose weight at the beginning, but if she is in hospital, then they will put her on a drip, to keep her fluids up, but if she's not having milk her bowels won't be working as there is nothing to push the poo through (sorry tmi).  So she is in the best place.
