Yup it’s me again!

Ella's got erythromycin 125mg/5ml for an ear infection. She's had it before and bar the radioactive nappies, has been fine with it. She's been on it since Thursday but as well as having dodgy guts, she seems to have a tummy ache on and off, and she's been sick a few times.

I didn't give her the 4th dose at bedtime tonight to see if it made a difference, so the last lot she had was at about
3.30pm. She went to bed fine at 7.15, but didn't go to sleep, and has just been sick. Now she's been sick, she's quite happily snoring like a bear.

The sick is mainly phlegm as she has a stinking cold, which is what started the ear infection off in the 1st place! I'm just not sure if it could be the anti biotics or not.

Like I say, she's had this before and has been OK with it. She's had them for 3 days now and doesn't really seem to have improved as much as I would have expected her too. Her temperature is down again, but I've been alternating calpol and nurofen to keep it down. I could take her to the walk in centre tomorrow, I'm just not really sure.

I would have thought if it was the antibiotics, she would have reacted straight away - any ideas? I don't tolerate erythromycin as it gives me horrid stomach cramps and that came on within hours. Just wondered what you ladies thought?

Erythromycin is well known for causing tummy upsets - more so than the penicillins (is she allergic?).

If her vomit is mucusy, it's probably that that's making her sick as well though.

As for how quickly the antibiotics work - it usually takes a good 48 hours to start having an effect. That's if it's a bacterial infection at all of course - if the doctor just saw a red ear drum it could be a viral infection. You can't say it's bacterial unless you see pus, or the eardrum is bulging.

Thanks Busydoc. She's had amoxillin before, as well as erythromycin and hasn't had a reaction.

Her eardrum was red and bulging, no pus so far this time - man that was horrid last time!

Will see how she is in the morning and will give NHS direct a call. Her sick was all mucusy  and it has sounded like she's needed to clear that all afternoon.

What a shame, hope you have a peaceful night!

Owen had a really upset stomach with those antibio's that when we went to NHS 24 they took him off them. He was pooing day and night on them if that helps.

Hope Ella gets well soon x
