If you are still having sex it could be taht you have given it to your partner, and he is reinfecting you..  If this is not the case then you could actually have a urine infection.  If thats the case try taking a sample of urine to you doc, and get it tested.  the other thing to do to reduce this particular infection is drink plenty of cranberry juice.  It kills bacteria on the inside before they make it to the outside where thrush is found. the pessary is much better than the cream.. i suffered with thrush a lot during my last pregnancy and the pessary was a god send. your doc can prescribe some, as many chemists won't sell it to pregnant women.

pessary all the way..however cos youve had it this many times...id say go see the gp.  Hell probably dish out the pessary and the cream together.  He could just give you the tablet..and your bloke the same...ooo whats it called fluconazole or summit...i live on the stuff at the mo cos chemo makes me get oral thrush..which believe me is major minging.

If you dont want to go see the gp...get the pessary and the cream one over the counter...you use the pessary...but get blokey to use the cream..saves on cross infection.  Oh yeah..watch your pill...and use a condom for the usual standard 7 days after.

You poor thing! I had thrush a lot when I was pg. The GP prescribed me a lower dose pessary, where you use one, three nights in a row. It is made by canesten, and you can buy it over the counter though some pharmacists seem to not realise that they can sell it to you and so you have to ask. It's supposed to be better to use this in pregnancy as it is a lower dose. I would go and see your gp just to make sure that it really is thrush you've got, but the way I understand it is that the cream in itself doesn't cure it (in women) it will just ease the symptoms. I don't think you can take the tablet while you're pg, but the pessaries should clear it up, and the cream should help you to feel better.

It is common to get thrush frequently in pregnancy as the blood flow to that area is so much more than usual. Try and make sure you only wear cotton pants, avoid wearing tights or tight fitting clothing (skirts are best) and if you take baths, don't use any perfumed bubble bath. Showers are better, but if you do bath, just use plain water. I hope it clears up for you soon.

I know how you feel honey. Last year i had thrush pretty much all the time...just as i'd get rid of one episode another stint would set in. It makes your mood very low which doesn't help the infection as it lowers your immune system even further. I was having accupuncture for endometriosis when i started with it.... my accupuncturist suggested i cut out dairy products from my diet....cheese, milk, yoghurt, etc and to also cut down the amount of sugar i was consuming. I have stuck by this advice ever since and have never had thrush again. Thrush thrives on sugar and yeast so if you cut down it really will help. I now drink soya milk instead...alpro soya is nice and it contains more calcium than regular milk. Also, keep a jug of cool water by the loo and after you've been to the loo just sploosh yourself with the water...instant relief....i have a jug permanently there!! Hope this will help you honey.

Love Tara.xxx

How are you being treated from thrush by you GP (midwife). I was prescribed pessary (clotrimasol) but it keeps coming back. I am doubting the effectiveness of clotrimasol. Are there any other medicines available to be prescribed by NHS??

Great Advice.

I'd certainly give the soya milk mentioned a try as calcium intake is very important during pregnancy.

As an example the yeast free diet enables you to have shredded wheat cereal or porridge oats made with water at breakfast or soda farls (irish yeast free bread available in the larger supermarkets). Other meals are much less limiting so long as what you eat is good quality, natural ingredients.

Breakfast cereals in general though often contain malt extract which can be high yeast content. When buying red meat products it is adviseable to use a butcher's or you'll need to check the ingredients for yeast extract also numerous convience foods and sauces/dips/mayonnaise or cheap quality meat. In general chicken & fish products are fine. The wrap style bread as well as chappites (sp?) are fine but it is worth noting pitta bread still contains yeast. Ryvita is also fine.

Outside of pregnancy raw (unpasterised) milk and cottage cheese are also usually well tolerated. Though during pregnancy these are not adviseable due to risk of salmonella (food poisioning).

This is the diet I follow to prevent myself constantly suffering from thrush and also along with fish oil & yeast free zinc supplements when needed it have seriously improved my mental health also. Unfortunately I was "under observation" for want of a better term during pregnancy due to a long standing mental health condition & was unable to follow my usual diet during pregnancy. It has taken me over 4 years to get rid of numerous bouts of thrush but now I'm finally free.

Good luck.

Oh honey what a bloody nightmare! I'm right there with
you and bit the bullet and took some fluconazole a week or
so ago. A lot of drs won't prescribe it in pregnancy but it's
safe so long as the dosage is lower than 400mg and used
for less than a week (for vaginal thrush it's usually only a
one off treatment of 150mg).

If you really don't like going down the medication route, bio
yoghurt applied directly to the affected area can be very
helpful. Sorry for the TMI but hey, we're all girls here right
;) : you can syringe it inside AND take it orally - eat as
much as you can stomach for a few days after you notice
symptoms desist.

If you really don't like yoghurt (strangely enough I
normally love it but it's one of my pregnancy food
aversions lol), then you can take lactose acidophillus
capsules orally. They are usually used as a preventative
measure so to treat the thrush, I'd recommend taking twice
the maximum recommended dose - it's practically
impossible to overdose on the stuff - the only side effect is
that it often causes the bowel to losen somewhat.

They recommend that you don't use perfumed
soaps/shower gels "down there" and that wearing skirts
with no knickers can also be helpful. Avoid nylon undies
and try to stick with cotton.

That's all I can think of right now.

Oh, one last thing, if you really can't kick it, mention it to
your dr or midwife - it's almost certainly just hormone
related so don't panic but recurrent thrush can (in rare
cases) be a symptom of Diabetes.

Hugs honey.
