I was think about how many of us are potty training at the moment, or considering starting soon, and wondered what your potty training tips would be. What has worked for you?

I'm training Eds during the day at home at the moment but use nappies when out or sleeping. He's doing well and has only had two accidents in the past 3 days. One was a poo though which wasnt so nice.

So all help would be appreciated, by me and all the other potty training mums I'm sure.

erm a ping pong ball tied to string and attatched to the loo gives little boys something to aim at...mind you watch out for the grown up little boys cos they cant resist it either.

The biggest thing I found was consistancy. Dont put a nappy on because it is more convienant for you as the parent. If using pull ups still encourage them to continue holding and using the potty.

Make more time for journeys, so that you can stop for toilet breaks, and also when out in town or supermarkets. Take los to the toilet frequently and make sure however packed your day is, you keep to the routine. If they ask for a wee dont ask them to wait, try as best you can to take them straight away.

Even at home, ask them regular, do you need a wee wee. Do you want to try etc etc Dont start cooking, or hoovering and forgetting to ask for 2 hours. Once they get the knack you have to ask less, but until then iots best to keep encouraging them.

Praise the success, and 'never mind' the accidents. Just something along the lines of, oh never mind lets take these smelly clothes off and try use the potty next time'. Stickers are magic.. I LOVE the person who invented syickers lol

I also found that if Joshua went to the toilet and didnt wee wee I washed his hands in soap and water, if he wee'd he got to use kandoo soap, same with the kando wipes.. only used if he was successful! That was a great hit. I also put stickers extra up to make the bathroom fun, but thats obviously not convienant for some parents, also we had 2 bathrooms so one was mainly his (downstairs) and most others used the upstairs, noramally decorated one lol

Also on the move, its best to carry lots of undies and clothes. Supermarkets do jeans for about £2 you cant go wrong for toilet training. Also have carrier bags to tie up the wet clothes or you'll be going round smelling lol

having travel accessories is great. The travel potties means you can stop by the side of roads, or if you are on the other side of town from the public toilets, the portable potty is small, light and quick to pop up! that was definitely my lifesaver lol You can also get from Boots mats for the car seat and pushchairs. they have a loop for the pram/chair belt bit, and they are blue or grey on the top and waterproof underneath to stop it soaking through. Expensive but essential lol Although I started putting mine on wetproof side up so if he wet I could wipe it down and he could still sit in the pram, they were too expensive to carry a few with me, and obviously couldnt sit on them wet lol

Ok Ive run out of ideas and I have sore finger slol.. Good luck to any potty training mummy or daddy xxxxx

Thanks for the tips!
Just a quick question though. Adam is now 3yrs and 1 month old and still doesn't seem ready. Is this normal because I'm starting to worry now. I'm not sure whther to try now because we will be moving house very soon too.
Sorry to hijack your thread Madz!

They do say that boys are often later to toilet train, although I do believe 3 years is about the norm to start them. I wouldnt worry if he isnt ready yet, unless he needs to be dry for nursery in September? Let him direct you as best as possible. I heard (and this might not be factual) but children that are 'forced' to toilet train when they are not ready have an increase in adolescent bed wetting and bladder weakness. maybe talk to him about toileting, leave a potty out, and encourage him to tell you when he's wet/dirty. he'll soon pick it up. xxx

My tip would be always put pants/knickers on lo's even when your in the house and potty/toilet training.
It may seem easier to just let them run around with nothing on.. but when it comes to going out or getting dressed, they can get confused or forget, and still think they have a nappy or pull up on!
It gets them used to having to pull them up and down when they need to go.
And Amy... both my boys took much longer to toilet train than my girls, and both also prefered to go straight to the toilet rather than go anywhere near the potty lol.
Like Chris said, if he doesnt need to be trained for nursery just yet, then let him guide you, but i would deff start putting the potty out so he can get used to it in his own time.
Good Luck to all, it can be a stressfull time, but they'll all get there in the end.

Oh thats weird, because Joshua has never favoured the potty. I thought it was maybe because we had the downstairs toilet so it was just as easy for him, maybe its a boy thing?

Also agree with the underwear on even when in the house.

I'm waiting until Ella is aware of whats going on in the waste products dept, and up until yesterday, she was happy to be dirty or soaked and not care.... but then today, she has (aparently) asked to do 3 wees in the potty. I say apparently as my MIL had her today and MIL thinks I should have potty trained her about a year ago!

That said, we've had the potty out for a week or so now as I wanted her to get used to it. Tonight when I was getting her ready for bed, she did do a wee on the loo - so that was cool!

Am going to see what happens over the next few weeks. I've got a week off in August so had thought that if she was showing an interest, we could give it a good old go then.

All tips for wee girls (no pun intended) gratefully received, and if anyone knows if you can get Charlie and Lola pants, please let me know!

ill bet yo can get lola iron ons for plain pants!

try potty beg/end of day for few wks

always be positive-got m n s sticker and story book too, she out a sticker on her chart and one on her tee shirt each time she went on her potty

ask every 15 mins, write down when they go-times and what they do-you should see a pattern-lilys was 30 mins, then ask every 30 mins for a few days/weeks

after about 4 days she started telling me, then a few days after that just went herself

pull ups were rubbish-too like nappys

shes pretty much ok now

going out was the scariest bit!

shes now trying to get thru the night-she tels us 'need wee mummy!' at 5:30 most mornings!

reducing drink intake from 1hr before bed now

enjoy!!
