Another question from me! At the moment I'm reading up on different births and pain relief options as I'm sure the birth of my twins, all going well, will be really different to what I've experienced before.
I only had gas and air before and had my two children in the birthing pool at the hospital. My birth-plans went to plan, which I know is rare! I'm a bit of a control freak person and don't like the idea of being out of control and so I'm worried about pain relief options.
I'm also reading that many midwives and consultants are reluctant to try and deliver twins naturally and are quick to use interventions like forceps (ouch!) and ventouse (sp), especially for the birth of the second twin. Have any of you experience of that? (I didn't need stitches for any of my previous birth, and the thought of being cut terrifies me!)
Should I just opt for a c-section- or should I avoid it if at all possible?

I'd say speak your feelings over with your midwife. Down to if you were to deliver naturally, would it be likely intervene and bring out forceps etc. Talk over your worrries, thoughts and hopes. Hopefully he/she is nice enough!

Ben was a natural delivery with just gas and air. I'm a twin and we were forceps delivery, but that was in the 70's! I'd discuss it with mw and cons and tell them your concerns. Just because they want to do a certain type of delivery, if you don't want it and its not an emergency then you should be able to choose, even if you are having twins. See if Trouble or Dani can help?

Do talk to your mw. I had a forceps delivery with Kirstin and had to be cut. I can't remember any pain etc from the cut which healed well. My main prob was the 3rd degree tear my dd gave me but thats another story. Kirstin didn't come out with any marks on her head or a funny shaped head.
My best birth was Harrys elective c section as I felt in control, knew what was happening. I also recovered well from it, but of course you would have 2 little ones to cope with and well as the older 2 at home which might make your recovery a bit harder.
Not wanting to scare you, but worth knowing. My friend had twins, Twin 1 was delivered naturally but then twin 2 was in distress and had to be delivered by c section. I really hope you can get the birth you want.

I had an emergency c-section with ds after a long labour and felt no control over any of it, i had an epidural, that went wrong 3 times and all sorts, but, with dd, i had an elective c-section, everything went to plan and i felt much more informed about the whole process and recovered quickly to, but have been left with lower back and leg pain after epidural's.
I would discuss all the different options available and go with what makes you most at ease.

All my births were fast and straight forward, expecting twins does make things more difficult for you. I presume is more difficult to stick to a solid birth plan as a twin birth would probably be less predictable. All I can suggest is having a good chat with your midwife and find out all the options and the statistics for various situations.
I hope you manage a simple straight forward birth with no complications xx

well I've had 2 bloomin emergency c-sections - the second one I was awake and it was a million times calmer than the first which I was knocked out for.. my recovery was ok with the first but much quicker the second time around... altho I must be honest, I had a lot of help for the first few weeks and I knew from the first time round that I needed to take it easy...so I did! Not sure you'll have the same opportunity to do that? I have no experience of a natural delivery so I don't know what the recovery is like compared to that of course...
with a c-section, you don't get out of bed for 24 hours and you have to be in hospital 3 nights - at least that is the policy here.. I was up and about in hospital after the 1st day but it was quite painful lifting hannah out of the cot etc. I know people sometimes think it's the easy option, I honestly dont think it is however, like I say, I've never tried pushing a watermelon out of my lady bits lol.
my friend had twins naturally without any assistance..in her own words "they just flew out" and one was breech right up until the end as I suppose it was the only way to get comfy...
I don't know if any of this helps you any, good luck with your decision, x

All 5 of mine went fairly well, natural deliverys. With my 1st ds, id done the birth plan like suggested and it turned out nowhere near what id put down for things i did/didnt want so i didnt bother with them for the others. What will be will be, and sometimes there's not a lot you can do to change things, depending on your babies positions etc when it comes to them being born, is I'd have some kind of plan for how you want things to go, but with twins, it might get a little altered as time goes by, so i'd just try to be as open minded as possible about the different opions you have avaliable. But saying that, i do wish everything goes the way you prefer. x-x-x

Ella's arrival didn't go to plan as I was induced, and then Ella decided to un-engage herself and wedge nicely into the side of my hip. I had an emergency section after 2 days of labour and like Greedy said, I really don't think its the easy option.
That said, if I fall pregnant again and the odds were against me for a natural delivery, I would elect for a section. If I had know I was having a section, I'm convinced that it would have been a very different experience as I could have prepared myself for it mentally and physically in terms of getting help etc for the first few weeks post birth.
I have a friend who has just had twins and she had them naturally. She went into labour at 35 weeks and when she arrived at the hospital, the midwife wanted her preped for a section. She said that she wanted to try naturally and they eventually agreed. Twin 1 arrived quite quickly, twin 2 was not so keen to come out! She stuck with it though and she delivered him naturally too.
If you want a natural delivery, then you go for it. That said, if a section is suggested, don't let that worry you as it can still be a very positive experience.
