Rachel has had a cough for over 4 weeks now so I took her to the doctor for the second time. the first time she went I was told it was just a cough and my gp gave me a cough bottle, it did improve but it never went away .

She sounded a bit chesty yeterday so I took her to the doctor again this morning.

It turns out it allergies to dust.

Now here is the thing she has no pillow, no toys in bed with her, she sleeps in a sleep bag so no duvet.

I hoovered her room and her curtains and her bed. I must now put away all her soft toys.

My house isn't that dusty but my question is .... if it was my house should it not have shown up before now....could it have been the 5 days she spent with my mum in her house ?

What made your doctor say it was a dust allergy?

I'm not being funny but Eds was diagnosed with Asthma following a persistent night time cough. He was given an inhaler and then tablets. I was a bit concerned as no really tests were done so I self weaned him off the meds and the cough is gone. I have an inhaler still just in case but I think his cough stemmed from a really bad cold and chest cough he had at christmas and hadnt shaken.

I have a serious allergy to dust (amoungst other things) and that only began 9 years ago after I was ill and my immune system was low. Try hoovering her mattress if she is worse at night/ first thing.

It may be that she has more good days than off, or that she builds up a tolerance over time. I hope her cough and chest settle soon.

The gp looked up her nose and said it was swollen ???? and dripping backe her troath causing the cough.

I have hoovered the carpret, mattress and her curtains. I changed her sheet and I removed a foam chair she love but I will buy her another one.

I am going to remove a rug from the sitting room as well as hoovering everywhere.

I still think that mum's house in millstreet caused it and it is very dusty down there.

no matter how much you hoover..dust is going to happen chica.  All you can do is keep hoovering..invest in an antihistimine and start dosing her with that.  Your doc should have prescribed an antihistimine if she has a dust allergy.  Her soft toys, i wouldnt put them away..bung them in the washing machine regularly and jobs done.

Im allergic to dust, pollen of all types, cats, dogs, birds and gawd knows what else.  But...ive got a cat and two dogs.  I havent changed anything, but I find if the hoovering isnt done every day then I know about it..Natasja has allergies, but hers are mostly pollen based and she really knows about it so shes on an antihistimine til september when nearly all culprits for it have stopped.

She was probably over-exposed and has become sensitised chica..but I wouldnt go overboard on chucking stuff out..she needs to be exposed a bit to help build up her own anti-bodies to it..but not overexposed if that makes sense.  Give her mattress a hoover a few times a week, curtains once a month..and her room whenever you hoover it chica.

My brother is allergic to dust and my mum cleans his room with a damp cloth as the hoovering can make the dust to fly around the air and just resettle somewhere else

Dust mites love soft toys, bedding, mattresses - anything soft and squidgy. To kill dust mites, you need to either wash the item at 60 degrees, or freeze it - and no I'm not joking!

Ella has a lot of cuddlies and when the doc thought she might have asthma, there was no way I could have washed them all at 60 as it would have ruined them. So I bagged them up, and put them in the freezer overnight. I do this every 3 months. I make sure I wash her bedding at 60, ok so it doesn't stay colour fast for as long but better for it to look a bit knackered after a while in my opinion! You can get hypo-allergenic pillows and mattresses or mattress covers which might be worth a try too.

That said, it does sound a bit odd to just say its a dust allergy. Ella has coughs on and off to varying degrees and particularly has had them as a result of sinus problems where the stuff backs up and drips onto her throat. We've bought a room humidifier - and the difference is amazing. Best thing we've ever bought.

Thanks for all the advice girls, I think I was just taken back by it all because it was the last thing I was expecting as I had her at the doctor a month ago and it was over looked or it wasn't there.

When we build our new house we have decided to put no carprets down.
