hi baby gurus! life really hectic so not much chance to get on to the site but it's nearly half five in morning and after a night with katie it's time to turn to you for help!!

katie is now 18 weeks old and for a long time has been teething, much to my shock! her gums get hot and hard, she dribbles constantly, everything has to go in her mouth, always chomping on her fingers, or me! as it's 6 years between maddie and katie it's kind of a baptism of fire all over again, so with being forgetful as i am at the mo (another worry for another time as i'm really bad and it's getting to me big time!) i need advice and to check up that i am not missing anything. i just want to help her and i am soo tired and poor mads has to suffer too  as a result of katies teething.

katie's nappies have been horrible, that's too be expected, that much i can remember, but it's like she's really uncomfortable with her tummy. not sure if it's gripe type tummy she has but her movements suggest so. does that come with teething?is calpol okay to give or should i try iboprufen and is that better? at the mo when i felt her head/cheeks they were hot, so i thought she had temp, but when i felt her core temp she was cool. i guess thats then due to the gums but does that mean she is not far off cutting a tooth? which teeth come first normally? i only ask as maddie hjad her incisors (fangs) first and fod love her looked like a mini gummy vampire, not a good look no matter how cute she was!!! lol!

i give katie the teething gel, but has anyone used the teething granules? i saw them the other day and i recall through the dim and distant past that someone once thought they were fab. i think anyway!despite all teething toys and devices on market katie doesn't seem to like them as they are all hard. she seems to prefer gnawing on her rabbit comforter. in fact she now has new toy as i showed her one that mads had when she was little, katie grabbed it, so i thought oh how sweet, turned my head to see maddie and turned back to find katie had stuffed it into her mouth and dribbled over it! i could'nt put it back after that! katie is not consistent with her acceptance of dummies so not really an option. this am she seems a bit snuffly so is that a teething sympton and she hates being put down at the mo, which makes me think poorly not teething. i think also that as maddie teethed so easily and katie clearly isnt i feel a bit in the dark.it's just i don't want to miss something important and want to make it as easier for her as i can.

sorry to go on, but i am tired, condfused ...confused even and sore...carrying her does flare the ol spd when there is no let up ineither sitting, lying or moving with her. in fact the other day she cried almost all day and was really out of sorts and in the end i joined in which was not nice for maddie to see. she is so sweet and such a good girl . anyway time to go my lord and master...oops daughter needs me...time up!!

poor you! First things first, here's a hug!

ibuprophen is great for teething as it helps inflamation (sp) and I used to use the ashton and parsons powders as the kids seem to love them!  Along with oodles of teething gel.  Hope you get some rest today! xxx

Aww poor you two.

I used Ashtons powders as well and they were excellent. Also a cold wet flannel is great for them to chew on.

Eds started teething at 10 weeks but didnt cut a tooth until he was 6 months.

These are my tips (if I can remember them all):

  • Teething gel, lots of it, all over gums.
  • Put teething toys in freezer for short time to chill them (dont let them get too cold.
  • Eds liked chewing a cold, slightly damp flannel.
  • Teething granules didnt work for us but others have sworn by them.
  • Nurofen is good for teething but if shes really bad alternate calpol and nurofen.
  • You might find some advice here
  • I found eds would get a very sore bum and a sniffly nose if he was teething badly. I used medised at night for the nose and bepathium or metanium were really good for his bum.
  • Remember it doesnt last forever and will get easier - I'll add more as I think of them. Good luck!

MEDISED...its great stuff...you can only buy it from a pharmacy though..get the big bottle and itll last you a while.  Its a god send, its got pain relief in it as well as an antihistimine which helps them to sleep (and if they sleep so do we lol).

Bonjela by the bucket load, plenty of sudocrem for sore bums...cold things to chew...

Another one is buy some matches to prop up your eyelids...grit your teeth (sorry), and hope they all come through quickly..rather than dragged out for ages.

I'll go with all of the above!  the teething powders actually neutralise the stomach and rear end problems (or so it says on the pack!  I keep forgetting to give them to Tiny! lol) I swear by teething gel, and cool toys.  However 2 yr olds don't help the whinging of the teething baby!  They aggravate them! lol  Good luck, and as Madz says, it doesn't last forever ( but my god does it feel like it when you are going through it!).

i have to agree with the medised it a little bottle of miracles or it has been with my youngest dd. both mine teethed early reece had a full mouth by the age of 1 but he was never a problem with him but olivia was a nightmare i found there was gum rub it was either bongela or a calpol teething gum that you could put on as often as you wanted you didnt have to wait the 3 or 4 hour to be up and that really worked to. if giving medised though i would just advise to give it before bed at nite and not during the day i made that mistake and took me most of the day to wake her up. good stuff though.

When she is older and weaning, carrot sticks and frozen melon slices are great for them to chop on as its cooling to the gums and gives them something hard to munch.

Ashton and parsons teething granuals were great as an instant confort to Louis.

wow, thanks guys/ i knew i could count on you.

unfortunately have had to endure few more days of impromptu screaming sessions, but it would be so much worse for her, poor bubba. it's so frustrating not being able to settle her when usually i always can and do find a way. not helped by concerned looks and ooohs and aaahs and poor thing look at the poor baby comments i was subjected to when katie went from being happy and gurgling at the entrance to screaming the store down by the time i got to the baby bit. our local tesco (bar hill) is supposed to be one of the largest in UK, but that was when it was built, but that is quite an amazing feat really to be heard in the entire store. it felt like that anyway. something to be proud of i guess.

anyway i have a wriggly, dribbly girl on my lap who is getting fed up and daggers from my six year old as i broke into her computer session to check things out. will be getting the teething powders later and will report back. better go. thanks a million again.
