Here here 3small - You have said everything I hav been thinking of saying about this but havent found the words. I am ALL FOR breastfeeding (as most of you well know) but  think these statistics can make people feel worse rather than help people. There are REASONS why breastfed babies may be healthier, less prone to obeseity etc (although again there are plety of bottle fed babies who thrive and dont become obese). I think people, and especially mothers, need to follow their own instcts more than being forced to follow statistics.

Madz I don't think anyone is being forced to do anything.  It's totally up to the individual whether they breastfeed or not.  Take smoking for example as 3small bought up statistics show that you are more likely to get certain forms of cancer if you smoke but it hasn't forced anyone to give up, people give up if they want to and they smoke if they want to.

I find statistics quite amusing and take them with a pinch of salt.  Most statistics can be unraveled and shown not to be a good study with very little effort. They are not scientific studies and most have questionable control groups.  People however do listen to them, for example in the 1980's there was a study that showed you were more likely to have a car accident if you drove a red car.  Car sales for red cars dropped that year.  Did the amount of accidents on the roads drop?  Unlikely, just a different car colour had the more accidents.  It was nothing to do with the colour of the car making people crash it was the fact there were more red cars than any other colour car on the road at that time.

Statistics can be used to prove or disprove any point.  Yes there are health benefits to the mother and to the baby from breastfeeding however, having a daughter who was bottle fed and 2 children that were breastfed I see no huge difference in their health, I do however see huge differences in their personalities.

Yes, you are right mumsam.

I think this statistic should be banned it is giving off a negative, bonkers image about breastfeeding.  It is influencing 1st time pregnant women in thinking that all the other breastfeeding benefits must be a load of crap as well!
