Andy's cousin had a lil girl just over a week ago. She already has a son by an ex and a 2 and 1/2 year old girl by her hubby. Thing is, I think they were 100% sure that they were going to have a boy this time. I met her in the supermarket on Sat and she just didn't seem "all there". She hardly spoke about the baby at all and didn't even smile when mentioning her.

I've tried calling her but she always has to rush off which I can understand but I really think she's struggling. What should I do ?

Could you not pop round for a drink and chat? Maybe take a box of chocolates or biscuits and tell its for mummy time. Then maybe put the kettle on for her, and just have chit-chat. There's always that special way of questioning that makes a person open up, just try and tap into that. Ask her how the other kids are adapting to a new baby sister, that sort of thing, not so your asking its like you thinkshe cant cope. Hopefully, if she does need to talk she'll then open up to you (assume your ready to take on her woes if she has any)

If mum2joshua's advice doesn't work (which is top notch as usual ;) ) do you know who her health visitor is?? Could you raise your concers with her?

If not drop in a card saying special friend, take time to chill and relax, with some chocs attatched though the letterbox  (maltessers fit, don't they madz ;) ) and just put a pm in there i'm here for a chat whenever your up to it day or night. Catch up soon, love xxx

Might work.... made me a friend whom i can't imagine life without

Thanks so much. Unfortunately I live about 20 miles away from her and don't drive. I'll try calling her again just so that she knows she has someone ready and willing to help if she needs me.

Does she have internet? Introduce her to us/or email her.... If that fails send her a book (there's a good one about pnd, done by...oh can't remember the name pm me if you want to know it and i'll get it next time i go upstairs) or box of chocs/flowers etc... definatley call her but just say how you doing are the kids keeping you busy? don't talk about the new born till she's ready or you feel she's ready.

Good luck keep us posted and don't go getting down about it, it's she might

She will open up to you it just takes time.

Well done though as knowing people are there sometimes makes all the difference!

If you met her so soon after the birth it's probably been when she's hit the "baby blues" hormonal time that most mums go through about a week after the birth.  It's probably an idea to write her a wee note in a nice card saying if she needs an ear to listen you'll be there for her.  Then it's up to her.  I know that one thing that really annoyed me when I had new babies was folk "just popping round", it stressed me out to be honest.

Drop her a card or letter and some flowers or choccies. Try not to inundate her with phone calls, she may well be genuinly busy! I agree that just coz she looked abit 'rough' when you saw her, doesn't nec mean she's depressed. I know I looked awful most days post labour! Hope she's ok and has support around her. At least she has you to look out for her x
