Gosh, I wouldn't have a clue. all I know is that they recommend 21 oz of milk a day for children under 5. this can also be made up with cheese and yougurts and other daily products.

They really only put children with bad eating habbits and underweight as a result on suplemts.....BUT at the end of the day it's your choice and you know your child better than any one.

I would ask your Health visitor or they usually have a phone number you can ring on the pack.

BTW welcome to mad mums, My name is martha, i live in Ireland with my dh and our DD Rachel who just turned 2.

Can he not have cows milk?

My friend used to have rice milk instead of cows milk because of her intolerance. If you son as a dairy intolerance then I'd think he'd be ok with it, but I would check with your HV, just give her a quick call.

I just looked it up as I've never heard of it and it seems to be a rice alternative rather than a milk alternative.

It is only low fat milk which isnt suitable for young children as they need the calories in full fat milk. I dont think it will do your child any harm however I wouldnt use it as a substitute for milk.

However if you son wont drink milk you could try adding it to food or cereal or using other dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt.

I have heard of rice milk but only because my dd is lactose intolerant and I look out for alternatives.

I have always been told that if a child its a varied healthy diet there is no need for any supplements. So I tend to follow this rule. For advice the best people I have found to speak to are Hvs and pharmacists.

I would see your gp or Hv and get him checked for lactose intolerance as there is probably no need to give him  soya or rice milk if he isn't intolerant.

Have you tried those nesquik milkshake straws or milkshake powders, hot chocolate (but warm obviously) to disguise the cows milk?
