Louis has had a terrible barking like cough for a few days.  I got him a gp appointment this afternoon, as he's virtually lost his voice and cries everytime he coughs.

Anyhow, goes straight into see the gp he barks and she say's its croup.  She said his chest was noisy but ok, but she also said we have to watch his tummy every few hous to see if it pulls in under the ribs and if thats the case take him straight to A&E for oxygen.  He's finally asleep at the min full of calpol, but not sure for how long as he keeps waking himself up.

I though croup only affected small babies

My ds has a really sharp cough and cries when he coughs and has virtually lost his voice too, been to dr's and they said his chest is clear, we have been using a humidifier and it seems to be working as he is a bit better today.

Hope Louis feels better soon.

Hi Rin Croup can affect children normally up to the age of 5. My cousin had it bad every year and he has finally grown out of it. My girls have also had this and they can still get it. I dred this time of year but thankfully they have only had it once.

Has he had this before? Try a steamed up room that helps clear the airways. Also a wet flannel on the radiator and even foggy mornings are better. Its the moisture in the air that helps them.

They do eventually grow out of it but i do believe its in young children and old adults that get it. Let us know how he goes.

It also usually takes about a week to clear. xxxxx

Hugs to him bless him and to you too. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My friend's little boy has just had this, he's 3 on monday. It really is horrible and the poor lad really wasn't well at all.

We have a humidifier and I leant it to them while Aleks was poorly, and it did seem to help him. If his cough gets really bad, sitting in the bathroom with the door shut and the hot tap running to get some steam up should help.

Sending you massive hugs and hope he's better soon.

Thanks for that Doubletroub.

I'm about to go up and run a hot bath for the steam as he's not shaking the cough at all atm.

We were up and down all night.  I went in the bedroom at about 4am and found harry sat on the end of louis bed shush'ing him and rubbing his back - bless

will see how he get on today. He is absolutley shattered.

Aww bless him. Its caused by the airways closing in the throat thats why they get the barking cough. My girls ended up being took into hospital and put on a nebuliser. They don't really give anything for this as they are not sure if the antibiotics help or not. Some docs do give them but most don't. They just have to try and ride it out.

The other best thing is if he starts getting upset try and calm him before he really starts as this makes it worse also.

Sending him loads of get better soon hugs... xxxxxxxxxx

Hey babe! Its horrible to see them coughing like that, my boys had it at the same time when they were about 1ish. I sat for several hours at a time in my shower room with shower going on full blast, with an oil burner with oilbas oil in it, rocking them both back and fore. Didnt do wonders for my back but it did seem to help them!! We ended up been given a nebuliser which we used every night before bed, but steamy room seemed to work better.

Hope Louis feels better soon so you can stop worrying!!

Take care
