Can anyone tell me anything about placenta previa?

A friend has been told she might have it and needs to be scanned to be sure but hasnt been told anything about it. Understandably she's quite nervous so I said I'd find out what I could from you guys and send it to her.

Thanks xx

Have heard of it. there are 3 types of it:

  1. Is complete previa, is when the uterus is totally covered by the placenta
  2. Partial previa is when only part of the cervix is covered.
  3. Margianl previa is when the placenta is just on the edge of the cervix.

HTH, xxx.

I don't know an awful lot about it, but was told when I had my scan with Rebecca that I may have it, and would possibly require a c-section. I got an extra scan at 32 weeks, and was told that the placenta had moved 'upwards'  as the womb had grown and was fine. I went on to have Rebecca naturally.

Hope your friend's scan is fine.

xxx

Jen had placenta previa with Billy. In her early scans she had a partial placenta previa which, as Hazy says, only covers a section of the cervix. As the uterus grows and more space is made, and things stretch is very likely that the placenta will move to better area of the uterus. With placenta previa, the baby can not be delivered naturally as the placenta covers the cervix. You friend should try saying relaxed, and assured that is very likely to move birth her lo wants to put in an appearance. The scan will be able to tell her and the doctor more about the placenta's position.

Hun

It's where the placenta can cover the cervix completely which can leed to painless bleeding, poor trasfusuion between placenta and bubs, depending on it's severity bed rest is normally advised along with a c-section due to risks to both parties.

Wish her luck but not too worry till she's had the scan as i was told i had this with krisitan but it was not the case!

I had a marginal previa with my first daughter and knew nothing about
it until I started to hemmorage - luckily I was actually in the hospital at
an anti-natal appointment when it happened! It wasn't picked up st my
regular scans. I still managed to deliver naturally and even though she
was 4 1/2 weeks early she was fine and healthy - mind you they did
leave me two days in the high dependency unit and pumped me with
steroids for Nicola's lungs before enducing me!
Why am I having a fourth one again?
