Hope someone can help.

I have been taking iron tablets for past 9 days. I have been feeling nauseaus (sp) quite alot. Mentioned this to mw who said probably the iron tablets and to eat something when I take it. I don't take the tablet at meal times as I always have a mug of tea with my food. I have tried eating something while taking it but still keep feeling sick. My iron tablets are called pregaday. Has anyone taken iron that hasn't made them feel sick and not too constipated .  I want to go to my gp and ask him to change me to a different type, but not sure if gp will change the type, or and if he does, will I end up on ones that constipate me. (Like I did during and after my second pregnancy).

Can anyone recommend a decent brand of iron tablet, or is there no such thing?

Thanks in advance.

I had Anemia with all 5 of my pregnancies and was prescribed Pregaday with all of them.
They did make me feel slightly sick for the first week or so of taking them, but they worked for me within a couple of weeks and my iron levels went back to normal.
Has your doctor told you to eat the right things as well to help with it?
The usual is green vegtables (lots of brocolli, cabbage, green beans that sort of thing) and wholemeal bread and cereals.
They should help boost up your iron levels and give you some energy back that your lacking!
I haven't heard or taken any other iron supplements myself, so i hope you can get some help off others on here, or if not... i would go back to speak to your gp if your not happy with what your on.

Ferrograd c was good for me. It has vitamin c in it which helps the iron absorb into the body. Just double check you can take it during pregnancy as this was before i was.

You will find any iron tablet can cause you to feel sick.  Take them with orange juice and not tea.  Tea prevents the absorption but vit c in oj helps the absorption so you won't feel as sick.  Take them before you go to bed if they make you feel too bad.

I'm absolutely killed with constipation with having to take iron supplements- doesn't matter which type, I think it's just down to the iron itself!

The tea won't help at all, do you need to take a cup of tea with meals?  That'll be inhibiting your iron intake from your food.  I've been trying to take water or OJ with meals, but it's hard because I love my wee cuppas too!

I took Fersamal liquid as I can't take tablets, and its just as bad. Try taking it with orange juice and cut down on milk and tea. It does give you bad tummy ache and constipation, but thats the iron so not much you can do about it sorry! Hopefully you won't be on it for that long! Hope not anyway x

Have been taking the iron tablet about 9.30am with fresh orange. That is because I have not had a cuppa for an hour previously and don't get one again for another couple of hours.

I know caffeine and milk prohibit iron absorption but I take my tea that weak, it is baby tea I drink, the tea bag is just quickly dipped in and out and when drinking it in the house I drink decaffeinated (sp).

Never thought of taking the iron tablet going to bed. Think I will give that a wee try.

Thanks for replies ladies.

I always take them before going to bed and multivits as I find if I take them in the morning I feel really sick for a good hour.  Taking them at bedtime I am asleep before I start to feel sick so don't know if they make me feel sick in the evening if that makes sense.  Increased Vit C will help absorb the iron so cut down on the constipation too.
