My gran woke up yesterday morning with her left hand blue, she suffers with rheumatoid arthritis.  She went to the Dr's only to be rushed to the hospital for an emergency appointment.  They have since told her she has a blood clot between her left shoulder and her wrist.  They have just moved her to the royal infirmary where they are going to operate tomorrow.  They are going to insert a balloon of some sort and inflate it to widen the artery.  That's all i know at the minute.  She hasn't been well for a while, she has really high blood pressure and has a form of skin cancer on her leg, that has to be scraped and burned off every few months.  So she is putting a brave face on it all.  There shouldnt be too much of a risk but you cant help worrying can you? She is 86 and hasnt half become frail this past year with all thats gone on in our dysfunctional family

This is just the icing on the cake as df's gran is really poorley at the minute with senile demencia so I'm trying to help mil out with her.  As according to social services, she isnt eligable for nursing home care as she isnt 'bad' enough so i'm not sure what state she has to be in for that but its a bit of a joke

why do things like this always happen near Christmas?

Awww hun i'm sorry to hear that your gran's not well. As for the clot ( i belive from information i have) they will remove it using a suction device and using the catherter with a ballon which inflates at one end to stretch it to prevent it happening again.... there are risks with every operation the main ones with this is, infection, bleeding, part of the clot breaking/coming free or being left behind which can cause really bad problems.....

I hope the procedure goes well and it's a shame that social services seem to be an impossible case. I do hope you get some answers etc soon. Sods law that it happens around this time.... hopefully it won't ruin your christmas too much.

How are you holding up?

Hope she get better soon and everything goes alright.

My 82 grandad has 1 leg and is half blind but according to social services and the benefit office he is not disabled  and can manage fine on his own.

Rin I really hope the op goes well for your Gran, I know it's a really worrying time.  You are right all these things do seem to happen just before christmas and it makes them feel a lot worse.  I hope your Gran isn't in any pain and they look after her well.
