Anyone else watching the chicken programme on Channel 4 ?
I for one, am never, ever buying cheap chicken again. I know that the conditions the poor things lived in wouldn't be great but I was so shocked and upset at how the wee souls are treated. I was in tears last night.
Just because they are chickens, dosen't mean they should be treated so cruelly.

I am a big fan of hugh ferrnelly-whittingstall so I was looking forward to this programme.
DH and I started it by saying we'd love to buy free range but it just isnt economical. Last night we had a long chat and have decided to go 100%free range or organic. Its not that expensive when you really think about it and it makes me feel much better about myself.

I didn't watch it, I meant to though lol Not sure it would have made me rush out and buy free range though. I dont even buy free range eggs half the time.

I already buy free range eggs and have to admit to buying the 2 for £5 chickens from tesco, but will only be buying free range chickens from now on. Maybe if more people do buy them the prices will come down a bit.

I am a veggie so don't need to worry about that, but when buying for the kids its a bit hard with 4 kids 2 adults and 1 income to buy the best of everything.

Free range is good however organic, especially when it come to live stock can mean the animals have a lower quality of life due to illness and ailments that their none organic cousins get protected against through immunisation etc. Just something to keep in mind if basing your life style choices on animal welfare.

We have friends with chickens so we always get our eggs from them or from a local farm which produce free range organic eggs.
But I have also been known to get the 2 for £5 chickens in tesco. The thing is you dont have to buy the best, organic is quite expensive but free range isnt much more really. I will def be thinking more in future.

I didn't see it, we don't buy chickens! I can't stand to touch them lol usually just buy breast meat! Never really think about where it came from though, i can't do that, it takes a lot for me to even eat meat, thanks to nikki(funchick) i tried some things and now can eat it providing i don't think about it!

I do buy the cheap chicken.. we have a roast every sunday and we have chicken once a month.. 4 kids, 2 adults, sometimes more if anyone stops for dinner, 1 part time wage until i go back to work in Feb.. there is no way we could afford free range on our budget. I have just looked on tesco and it over £7 for one free range chicken, where as the cheap one is £3.. that £4 could buy a pack of nappies, or a months worth of breakfast cereals...
If the price's came down, than yes i would prefer to eat the free range.. until then, its the cheap chickens for us..
