Cor Nicki, you cant eat much cereal in a month babe!!I spend £4 a week or more on cereal!! We dont eat a lot of meat, but we do eat chicken at least once a week. Only buy the breast bits and heave at the thought of touching them!!(have to wear gloves!!!) I will own up to buying the special offers in Tesco, as I m on a strict budget too. But I do think if we new what happened to our food before we bought it, whatever it was, I think we d revert to eating grass and salad.

I didnt see the program on chickens and I think I m glad. I m sorry it upset you Hazybabes, your a sensitive soul, so maybe you shouldnt watch anymore!!

Jain.xxx

ps had to turn the news off tonight because of RSPCA being called out to 30 dead horses and more just left to die. Would have had me in tears so I take the head in the sand option. Sorry I know I m a coward.

a box of shreddies and a box of coco pops, tesco own, under £4, will last just over 2 weeks each box.. yup, thats a months worth, lol...

I do have to agree tho... if we knew what happened to our food, we wouldn't eat..

I totally agree with you both Jain and Nicki, if we could all afford it we would be eating free-range chickens, but they are so expensive atm.  And if we did know what happed to them we would'nt eat them.  We desensitise ourselves by seeing meat all ready carved up wrapped in plastic and thats that - ooo that looks delicious, not, ooo wonder which part of its body that came from or did it die quickly and was it treat fairly?  Does anyone think that when they are down the fresh meat aisle?  The answer would probably be 'no'.  Unfair as it sounds but the phrase 'beggars can't be choosers' is certainly correct, and I know you lot wont take offence to that, cos you know I wouldnt disberrage you like that!

Finances do dictate, at times, what we eat and thats a fact.  I would also love to eat free-range, but I have 2 of the ' 2 chickens for a fiver' in my freezer as I type this and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Jain it also sickened me about the horses on the news tonight, folk shouldnt keep animals if they wont look after them properly.

i had taped it!! Didnt realise until i watched it! What a sickening programme! I am so glad we don't buy chicken that often! We have never bought free range though...Maybe if the price comes down, or my budget dramatically increases i will (on those rare occasions i do buy chicken)!

I must be the odd one nikki lol...i do actually always examine them and think "what part of the animal is this" and " i wonder what it looked like whole" and " i hope it was quick"...for now though i will continue buying my chicken breast or chicken breast pieces that are cheap, and within my budget! If i can't afford chicken, i simply don't buy it! I can't stretch my budget any further at present for the free range chicken even if i wanted to!

DH and I have been discussing this at length and we will be cutting back in other areas to make sure we can afford this. We usually go down the pub on a sat afternoon to meet friends, family etc but we are going to stop going, or just have one drink. The price of one pint is the increase on the price of a free range chicken in tesco.

The price difference is just over £1 per kilo. The price of £7.38 at tesco for free range is the MAX price per pack.

I buy all my cereals etc tesco own instead of nestle or kellogs which saves 50p-£1 a pack too.

Not really given it a lot of thought...but then I have to be very very carefull with what goes into my tummy.

A lot of the organicy stuff for me is completeley out of the question due to the fact that it has more oestrogen in it than other products.

The law is changing and they are binning battery farms in what, 4 years time, something like that.  Thing is though...all the animals are killed the exact same way so kind of makes me sit on the fence.

I personally believe that the prices should come down a lot more on organicy stuff across the board, and makes it more accessable to all.....failing that ill just carry on ordering from claire barry (subtle plug lol) as you get full traceability from them...aaaand its nice meat...aaaand it all free range...

I have only just stumbled upon this thread and have to say was disgusted at the way the chickens where treated and so where my eldest 2 (i think it does them good to see where their food comes from they are 9 & 7 ) i have brought the 2 for a £5 but am making an effort not to and we have enjoyed several free range chickens since and we all agree there is a difference in taste. Its just not natural for chickens to be fed that quickly and does make me wonder if that is why there are so many more diseases about.

I have always had free range eggs my mum has her own chickens so we get the eggs from her or if she is short i buy free range from a supermarket or local farm and there is so much difference in a proper free range egg compared to a bttery hen. a good free range hen the whites are thick and the yolks are orangy yellow but a battery egg is watery and the yolk is pale and anemic. I wish i could afford to buy the best from a local butcher but unfortunatly i cant but i would rather have less of meat and the best quality i can afford im sure its better for us. It sad that we all have to worry about money so much but say we cant afford a free range chicken but can afford to buy luxuries like sky tv, cigerates, nights out, dvds computer games i think me included forget what is more important.

I watched it, and next time at Tesco went on a mission to buy free range chicken. I don't get a full one, just breast fillets usually, and they didn't have ANY free range fillets, just full birds! Was very dissappointed! Always buy free range eggs though, and will keep searching for free range breast fillets!

I personally buy cheap chickens, Im kind of de sensitized to this kind of thing so it doesn't bother me. Meats meat and we all gotta eat and I prefer to keep my shopping down to a minimum with spending considering everything else is getting more expensive. TBH with what goes on in the world, people suffering etc chickens would be at the bottom of my worry list. Sorry!
I only buy chicken from Tesco the rest of my meat I get from the butchers and most of my veg, eggs is locally produced being surrounded by farms!

The willow farm chickens in tesco are only about 50p diff in price to the normal cheap ones and they are rspca approved. They are also much tastier.

We also have friends who have chickens so our eggs are all free range.
