Louis has taken to biting his fingernails.

Not just biting but chewing them right down until they are red and sore and then he complains that they hurt!

What can I do to stop him? I'm forever telling him his fingers will drop off if he continues to eat them but it falls of deaf ears.

I've tried that stuff you paint on then gives a yuk taste but he says 'hmm thats nice' - odd boy!

Finger nail biting stuff is useless as a few sucks and it's gone, believe me I know from experience.  I bit my nails until I worked in a place where you really wouldn't want to bite your nails after.  Fran also bit her nails, it's kind of easier with girls as they get older though because they want nice nails and polish on them which is what stopped Fran.  If his fingers are getting sore sudacrem on them might help and might also stop him biting them so much that stuff really isn't nice tasting and doesn't suck off easily.  Fingernail biting is also a habit so you might need to give him something else to break the habit, something he might like to chew on, Fran chews pen lids now, not that I am reccomending that as it can be equally annoying with no pen lids in the house!!

This is something I have done since I was little and still do it now. I even make them sore without even realising till later on! Maybe like Sam said find something else to break the habit. Im trying to do this with Adam at the moment as since he has gotten over a cold he has an obsession with rubbing his nose and sticking his fingers up there. His top lip is getting sore from it. Sorry not much help!
