Hello. I just this weekend founf out that I was again pregnant with my 3rd child. I was curious as to what I can drink or medicine. I love diet soda and drink it all day long but I know its bad for you. So i switched to Rasberry tea but I read today that midwifes use rasberry tea leaves to induce labor. Also I bought some of them Vitamin waters and read that too much Vitamin A stimulates the uterus and can bring misscarriage on. So im lost also Im sick as a dog with a bad cold and coughing all night. What can I take for my bad cough and headaches??????? Please help. I have two children and last year had a miscarriage so Im trying so hard to be careful with this one. Anything I can do to prevent that again Im trying (which I do know what happene before was gods plans) So please help?? Anyone with advice is welcome!!!!! Thanks Laura

I wouldn't keep drinking the raspberry leaf tes, you aren't supposed to have caffeine, so no coffee tea etc unless it's decaff coffee. Water is great and you can get plenty of different flavoured ones these days. Eating a healthy diet you shouldn't need extra additional vitamins. As for coughs and colds I wouldn't recommend any of the over the counter things, try peppermint oil for adding to a stem bowl to help with any sinus problem, and a warm lemon drink with honey to sweeten is a natural remedy for coughs. Not sure how good they are, as I hate honey and lemon! Hope this helps you.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

As Vix says I wouldnt drink the raspberry leaf tea. There are pregnancy vitmains you can buy that contain all the vitamins good for you and baby during pregnancy, but as you say you shouldnt take vitamin A so I wouldnt buy other multi vitamin products without consulting a pharmacist or midwife.

There's lost of controversy on caffine drinks, but I think kept to a minimal then you wouldnt need to cut them out altogther, although that is the latest advice based on research carried out. Water is great for you so drink plenty of that. You could also make fresh juice drinks, or buy fresh juice drinks.

How far are you?

Hi, and congratulations!

Just to add to whats been said, if you like sparkling/fizzy drinks, carbonated/fizzy mineral water is OK during pregnancy. If you prefer still drinks, fruit smoothies are lovely or fresh juice or squash is fine. If you find that you're prone to cystitis in pregnancy, you can get juices with added barley, or drinking cranberry juice will help.

As for medicines, unfortunately there isn't a lot you can take when pregnant. If you're cough/headaches are persistent, its worth having a word with your doctor or midwife or gynie nurse to see if they can give you something, otherwise its paracetamol in small amounts only. If you see a pharmacist, they may also be able to advise a simple cough linctus to help with your cough, but if its been hanging on for a while, its probably worth talking to your doctor.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Awww hun i can only add that when i was pg i was prone to colds and coughs i found ribena made with water from the kettle and a dash of cold (half and half or hotter if you like it) helps to soothe the throat and gives you the boost of vitamin c.

Hope your feeling better soon hun, congrautulations on your pregnancy.

Congratulations!

I too had a bad cold at the begining of my pregnancy. I took paracetamol and honey and lemon hot drinks.

There is a little more info on what you can and cant have in this article.

Thank You all very much for replying to this. It helps alot. Im going to take it easy the next few weeks and also I have an appointment on Feb 12th so wont be long now to find out exactly how far and about the cough if I still have it then. As I know Im around only 4 weeks so far. I just ovulated on the 15th of Jan and on the 23rd went to the docs for this cough and she said the test was positive so Im not sure if I was pregnant from last month. So anyways thanks all for helping. Ill keep everyone posted.

Hi

Yep, afraid Paracetamol is about the only thing you can take for the headaches. I was at the docs yesterday as I'd had a migraine constantly since Saturday. She's now put me on antibiotics ( Amoxicillin) as she thinks I have a sinus infection. Apparently these are ok to take during pregnancy so if the cough and headache are still there, see your GP. Has anyone else had to take antibiotics while pregnant?

Hi, I had amoxillin for a chest infection when I was pregnant with Ella. I was a bit bothered about taking them to start off with, but the doctor assured me that they were safe during pregnancy and it was far better for the baby for me not to have a chest infection that could develop into something worse.  I'm very glad I took them!

hope you're better soon.

Paracetamol = Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in the US (just in case there is any confusion)
