Hi ladies! It's been a while since I've posted and replied, but I've tried to check in and read as often as I'm able. I'm sorry to see there's still so much pain about. Gentle hugs to everyone experiencing ouches!
Just want to ask for some advice about my upcoming orthopaedic consultant appt on feb 19th - first of all, HURRAY that I've finally got an appointment, I've been on an urgent waiting list since early october.
After
birth, the pain has gotten worse in my symphysis pubis and both my
hips. I had an xray about 8 weeks post delivery, and there was wear and
tear, an abnormal gap and misalignment of my symphysis pubis joint. I see a
physio weekly (finally! this has only just happened in the last 3
weeks) and she was shocked that my xray was taken lying down as
apparently the misalignment and gap is something she'd normally see for
women in a lot of pain whilst standing up in the flamingo xray pose
(with one leg bent).
I finally have an orthopaedic appointment
on feb 19th and want to know if there's any key words/questions I
should say which will get me help? my physio told me i'll possibly be
offered injections and/or surgery. Do you know anymore about these
options? are there more options?
I take tramadol (8 x 50mg) and
co-codamol as prescribed by my GP and I'm still in constant agony,
worse than when I was pregnant. still on crutches, living on the top floor flat of a large victorian building and in no position to move.

Hi hun
Firstly i'm sorry to hear that you are still suffering so much..... i too am hobbling around on crutches and what not.....(well when i can muster the strengh to use them as most of the time it's easier to potter around using furniture for me).
There are a few members who have looked onto the surgery route and madz has been having injections (prolotherapy) which has had good results and i'm going in for my first ones in the beginning of march.
As for questions i'll have a think of the ones i asked and i'll pm them to you if you'd like. Hugs hun x

So sorry you're back on crutches, Tsena! I find furniture and walls have a whole lot of extra supportive uses, too!
I don't know for sure I'll be offered either one, but my lovely physio said the consultant i'm seeing is really good and is likely to offer one or both as options to me, since the pain's so bad.
it'd be so helpful if you could pm any questions or tips to me - i plan on writing down a list of things to bring up so i don't get flustered, scared and shy, as is my usual way!

Hi hun i've pm'ed you.....
Oh one thing i didn't note is take a pad and pen and if you want to just note down the key points they say to help you remember key bits of the consultation as i find it impossible to remember anything and if i hear a bad note thats it i zone out so i suggest taking someone else with you too who can also listen and understand and help you digest what they have to say.

I agree with Tsena, take a pad and pen to make notes as i always get overwhelmed and forget important things.
I say a consultant who looked at my xray and nucular scan and said I needed surgery. I asked what that would mean for me and he said if he was honest it was not guaranteed to help me, that I would be layed up for 6 months, and it would be very difficult for me to have another child. He recommended I waited until Eds was older so i didnt need to be mobile for him and until i had had more children if i wanted. I can call him anytime i decide to go ahead.
I spoke to the pelvic partnership who told me of other women who had had unsuccessful surgery and did some research and decided no chance.
I spent a lot of time researching and talking to people and decided to try seeing a chiropractor. It wasnt cheap but i found one who specialised in pregnancy conditions. Within a month of seeing her I no longer needed the walking stick I had relied on for the previous year. She got to a fantastic level.
I then got a referal to a pain specialist who started me on prolotherapy injections 4 monthly. I am not cured yet but in the 2-3 months following my injections I can be a 'normal' person! I went horseriding on my honeymoon, have started cycling again and I go to salsa classes now. Its been my saviour!
Thats my experience. I will sort out a list of questions to ask too.

Thank you, both. I really appreciate your help!
Funnily enough, I did email Pelvic Partnership about this, but I got a reply asking me to phone up and that's not something I really feel comfortable doing right now. Sounds silly, I know, but I'm much more confident in writing than real life!
I had a look on my appointment letter and the consultant I'm due to see Mr Khitish Mohanty (I'm not a high enough rank on here to post links, but if you google him you can find his personal website and under "Clinical Practice" point 7 seems particularly good!)
He looks like he could actually be pretty helpful, do you think so?

Hun he sounds good
I've been looking at this link http://www.kmohanty.co.uk/webpages/post.htm and he seems ok, seems to know the field and is a specalist in the pelvis and post pregnancy related conditions, and it says he has had sucessful surgeries and i would personnally ask if it would be possible to talk to or meet some of them to put my own mind at rest.... ask them about their experiences etc as it's a big op and a huge decision to make.
I would still question the recover time, amount of time out of action in hospital and on bed rest.... total recovery time and what he realistically sees as realistic for you in relation to surgery.... don't make a decision there and then any good surgeon will give you the facts etc and give you time to mull it over etc.
Even though this is something he might push for please make sure it is right for you and what you want..... check and ask about the injections (prolotherapy) as it's less invasive and a less time off your feet.

I agree he looks like he knows what he's doing - however...
This is just my view: Surgery should be last resort. Once you start putting plates in, cutting through muscle etc you can start getting all sorts of other problems.
I would want to know what are all my options?
What should I try before surgery?
Are prolotherapy injections a possibility?
If so how regually would you be be having them and into which joints?
How long would he expect it to be before you were pain free and no longer needed treatment?
If i decide not to go ahead with the surgery can I decide to do it at a later date?
What are my chances of a full recovery?
What are the possible complications and the impact of these on me and my family?
Could I carry another pregnancy if I had the surgery?
If so how would it be different and could it trigger problems?
How long is the recovery time?
How long will you be in hospital?
How long will you need to be on bed rest at home?
How many times has he carried out the procedure?
How often has it worked, and how often hasnt it worked?
Is it possible to get in contact with anyone who has had the procedure?
What exactly does it involve?
When he says recovery - what exactly does that mean? Will you be 100% better or stil have some pain?
Hope that is all ok. Its just some thoughts I have written down for you. If I think of anymore I'll add them.
If you have any questions about prolotherapy I might be able to help so just ask!

That's him, Tsena! To be honest, I'm just glad I'm seeing someone who at least seems to know something about pelvic problems from pregnancy! Believe me, I'm not looking to jump into an operation, I'm allergic to a lot of antibiotics and have been in anaphalactic shock more times than I'd like to recall because of this (I keep finding new things I'm very allergic to, that are nothing like the other things... it's not fun!) so I'm very cautious about any medical procedures.
Thank you both for your question ideas, they're so great. I'm currently in the process of transferring them to my trusty notebook.
I've had a bit of a reshuffle of painkillers - I'm still on tramadol, but now i take paracetamol and codeine separately, and diclofenac! I'm surprised i don't rattle. The codeine on its own has made me more than a little sick the last couple of days, but i seem to be through the worst of that now, thankfully. But I feel so weak and shivery, and my pain has been awful. I've been just lying on a flip down bed thing on our living room floor since tuesday. with a sick bowl. oh, aren't you jealous of my glamourous life?

Awww hugs hunny i normally just take up the bathroom and sleep in there when i get like that..... less walking to empty the bowl .
Do give your gp a ring as they can give you (wait for it....... ) more pills to counteract the side effects of the ones your on (see suprise!!).
I have sickness problems with the ones i'm on and lack of appetite as they make me not want to eat...(now there's another suprise hay!).
Hope your weekend is better for you hun..... give me a bell if you need a chat... oh and I'll be thinking of you on the 19th Feb so please don't keep us waiting too long on tender hooks to get the low down..... hugs and even softer hugs x
