Hey All,
Well I'm sure a few of you have been wondering why I've been so unusually quiet... well it's because our little Millie-Bump (now officially known as Millie May Howie )finally arrived!
Here's my long but exciting journey!
I started with mild contractions 7am on Monday, which got gradually worse and closer together. They were still bereable pain wise, but as they were only -3 minutes papart my Mum and DH were getting twittery so we decided to go to the hospital to get things checked out. When I got there, they ut me on the monitor and confirmed the contractions were coming regularly. After an hour and half on the monitor, I was examined only to find out my cervix was "the size of a polo"- great. The MW was going to let me come home but the Registrar decided as I was high risk (because of prev c-section) I had to stay in overnight to be monitored. DH went home about at about 10pm, and I was left very bored and feeling rather tired and deflated. For the whole night I continued to get contractions every 3-6 minutes apart, they weren't agony, but still meant I didn't get any sleep at all. By 8am the following morning DH returned to me a sobbing and depressed mess. I was shattered, disappointed not to have had my baby that night and thorughly deflated.
They gave me another, however as the pains weren't any stronger they/we were fully expecting me to be sent home again. However, much to everyones surprise I was between 3-4cm dilated so officially 'in labour'-yay! I was kept on the maternity ward until almost lunchtime, when I was getting restless. The MW decided to take me over to the labour ward for them to take over. I was re-examined and I was just over 5cm dilated. I was given my blissful gas and air, however the Registrar wasn't happy with the idea that no other pain relief had been considered other than gas and air (because of my allergies) The Anaestist came to see me and decided my only other option would be a specialist epidural that had the same effect as a normal one, but didn't have one particular type of pain killer in it. I was determined I wasn't going to have it, but the staff werent convinced.
At 8.15pm I was re-examined, however despite the fact the contractions were still painful, I wasn't dialating very fast and had only just reaached 5 and half cms. As I'd been uncomfortable for a while and was getting tired the MW offered to bgreak my waters for me to speed things up, and I was happy to agree. Once my waters had been broken the contractions got intense almost immediately. I actually only fully remember the first too after that point fully, cos at that point I really started sucking at the gas and air. I ended up in a half drealike sake, where I wasn't sure if I was asleep or awake- voices were distant, my mind was all a blur. As the labour neared the end, the gas and air was still working but not to the same extent. I could keep myself out of the unbearable pain area for a short time, but then I felt myself plunging back in. I was (apparently) very vocal and kept howling then apologising in case I was scaring other people on the ward. I wss hung off the side of the bed, and DH kept having to shove me back on and I started thrashing if the MW tried to touch my legs. The gas and air lost its grip further when I was ready to push, and despite the MW telling me it wasn't time I insisted on doing it. At this point the MW was begging me to take the epidural, but despite my hazy state I kept refusing. I came round fully around the 'crowning' point, but sucked my gas and air back to semi-concious again. BY the time Millie was delivered onto my stomach, I couldn't even be bothered to get excited by the announcement that I'd finished or how great I was for doing it all with gas and air LOL. I few breaths of normal air and I came round. Millie was a slightly grey colour which turned out to have been caused by the cord being wrapped round her neck twice (apparently our cord was hugely long) I was still really sored down there, and when they checked I had a 2nd degree tear very high up in the birth canal. The Registrar was called in to stitch me, but I was so tender I flinched everytime she touched me. She was a right snotty bat, and started telling me off and telling me I had to keep still so they could clean meand give me local anaesthetic or they'd have to give me a spinal (yeah sure, like I was gonna let that happen after I'd done the whole birth without) As the flinching was involunatry, I ended up having to get DH and the MW to pin me down at the hips so that I couldn't move while she (not so gently) poked cottom wool pads in my bits to clean me and gave me some anaesthetic injections so she could stitch me (she was a very grumpy and unsympathetic woman, very different from how the lovely MW had been thank goodness) That said, I'm still really glad I managed to have the birth the way I wanted.
Millie was weighed, cleaned and dressed. I was astounded when they told me she was 8lb 6oz cos Jess was only 7lb3 lol. We went down to maternity overnight and we got home about 4.00pm today. Everything is great, though I'm still shattered cos I've not relaxed enough to sleep yet LOL.
So... anyway, without further ado (and cos I know it's all your really waiting for LOL) here she is:
