My little lad has always been soccer mad.  I can even remember the very first day he kicked a ball around, he was 15 months old.

Anyway, we live close to the local footie pitch and on Sundays we often hear teams playing.  Sometimes I'd take the boys over on their trikes and Max has always shown interest.

So I decided to see about what was out there for him and found out there's an under 6s footie team, bless.  I was given the number of a coach and must've rang him 3 times before finally getting hold of him tonight - talk about perseverance!  (I really hope I don't look like an obsessive pushy soccer mom!)

We agreed a date for Max to have his 'trial' day: the 31st March.  Admittedly, I know nothing about football and being a single mum I don't have a partner to ask either.  So I told the coach this and got the ins and outs of football in 15 mins.  Apparently, all the coaches are CRB checked, FA and First Aid qualified.

I now know I need to get Max some wee shin pads and long footie socks (apparently they're cheap so if Max doesn't like it then I haven't lost out).  The rest of the kit is on hold until we know how Max gets on.

I'm so excited but feel abit ignorant about the sport.  I guess it'll come in time.

Does anyone else have a lad in a footie team?  Would be interested to hear.

Post Edit:  Oops just realised that this post should've been in the School Children category - sorry!

My ds is goalie for the local U13s team. He loves being part of the team. He plays in the west of scotland league and has matches most Saturday mornings during the season. Last weekend I had a round trip of 60 miles to watch him play. Usually it is one week home the next week away.

I am sure he will love it and as does Gregory and it really helped build up his confidence during the time he was being bullied a couple of years ago.

Hi hun

My young man (7 in june) has just joined the under 7's team.... he loves it.....

He has a full kit, boots etc.

You can pick up shin pads at tesco extra stores, and footie socks too..... depending on the size of your store.... not sure about asda as i don't have one local.....

If you want to ask any q's hun please feel free to pm me.

Kieran's dad is fottie mad but doesn't do anything with him and my dp hates football but i sit on the sides everyother weekend cheering him on.... (as we have alternative weekend access and the club is fine with this).

Just a note to add.... take a change of shoes and a drink of water and a snack for afters as they tend to be hungry little monsters!

Oooo yeah, Zany, the change of shoes and snacks are a brilliant idea - I would never have thought of that - thank you.

Harrysmum, I am so glad Gregory found something he enjoyed as well as help to boost his confidence.

I'll let you know how Max gets on.  I'm not telling Max that he's starting footie club until the night before or he'll be a bloomin nightmare!

I need to sort out leaving work early on Monday to pick the boys up, and mum has already said she'll have Tom.

I'm so excited for Max - can't you tell!

My lad has been on about joining the local football club too, and i like you, haven't the foggiest what goes on or how things work, so i'll be watching out for info here too.
I dont mean to hijack your thread Zo.. and this might sound like a silly question.. but if they join an under 8's team, do they have to change when they get to 8 and older?
My lad finds it hard to settle into new things, so just worried that having to change and start all over would be confusing for him?

And for the record, you dont sound like a 'pushy' Mum at all, if he's showing an interest and wants to join up, your just giving him the independance to choose his own social activities!!
I hope he enjoys it.

Awww thanks Mum of 4.  Incidentally, you haven't hi-jacked the thread, it's all information afterall.

I can only answer your question from what I've been told - I'm certainly not knowledgeable on the subject!  Apparently, here where we live there's an under 6s, under 8s and under 11s team, and yes they change coaches as they get older.

The 'season' runs the same pattern as the academic year:  I had no idea!

I don't know what else to ask or expect so I won't!

Hi hun, they tend to be good with kids moving up..... they tend to (in my area) let the boys do some practice training with the new coaches etc before they change so they know them.

Carrier bags for muddy boots too!

Find out what times it's on..... as it can vary and matches can be played later on.... if it's a match.... normally just friendlies( again my area) not proper matches till they are in the under 11's as it's more emphasis on fun and learning skills.... but if it's an away match how much notice and do you have to provide transport?

Fee's.... is it weekly fee of £1 or is there a yearly club fee too??

How soon do they want them wearing boots? (they're not cheap and come in lots of styles.... plastic studs (think these can be worn on all surfaces, gravel and mud and astro....) metal is for grass only i think and you have to change on pitch.....

Do they require forms to be filled out in advance or on the day.

Whats parking like (if your not local to walk).

Hth

My ds wanted to join our local team a few years back he went to the practice session said he loved it so went out brought the boots (got some cheap ones from sports world) and everything else and he decided after a couple of weeks he didnt like it. I think cos none of his mates where there.

Now all his mates play and he wants to start again but there is no room! his name is down and if a space becomes available its his but i have no idea about the game, the only reason i will watch it on tv is to eye up the mens bums and legs!
