I get some fuuny looks at times in my local co-op as I'm on a mission when I'm shopping to avoid aspartame & hydrogenated vegatable oil. Both for the sake of my DD as well as to ensure good mental health (avoid depression which both my DP & I have suffered) for all my family.
My motto is if its got ingredients which having been "invented" by humans I avoid it if at all possible.
I marched back to my doctor's the other day and spoke to a practice nurse who advised my DP to buy asparatime products as opposed to sugar ones in order to loose weight. I told her in no uncertain terms that WE would NOT be buying asapartame containing products in our weekly shop & my DP would either be drinking tea or water on his "diet". I could not believe her audacity when she replied "asparatame problems aside I suggest he drinks "diet" pop to avoid his sugar fix. I replied that re-introducing asparatme ran a high risk of his depression reoccurring then he wouldn't be doing anything let alone "dieting". Its a shame it takes a lot of the NHS soo long to keep up-to-date on recommendations.

I cannot believe it is still legally allowed in our childrens food and drinks - makes me so cross.
Luckly Eds drinks mainly water - I do allow the very occassional Fruit Shoot and he has the occassional squash but he drinks water 95% of the time so I'm not overly concerned about Eds but so many parents just are not aware of the risk, I certainly had no idea before I heard it a couple of years ago on madmums.

Just search youtube for Aspartame if you want to see more evidence about it.
I just don't understand them, OK, I do it comes down to cost, Aspartame is much cheaper than other harmless sweeteners but surely the opportunity is there for a giant drinks manufacture such as Britvic (who brand Robinsons) to turn this whole thing around into a marketing ploy and release a range of drinks that are marketed/packaged/advertised as Aspartame free We are already seeing other food products such as chewing gum specifically being marketed as Aspartame Free, surely one of the drinks manufactures must grasp this concept soon.
Perhaps we should start a Madmums campaign? It would not be hard to apply pressure to the bigger chains that sell products such as Fruit Shoots marketed specifically at children, such as Pizza Hut and Brewers Fayre.

I am with you on that one, they can have my ds for day after he has had a few of those lovely drinks aimed at our lo's if they would like to see what all the fuss is about.

I guess email Britivic to get their thoughts on it firstly, they might for example be just about to launch and Aspartame free range
