Can anyone tell me, what times a newborn baby should have a nap?. With my last one, I put him down to sleep during the day alot but come nightime he was waking up for feeds 4 times during the night, which drove me potty.  Is that the norm or should I be putting the baby down to sleep at 7.30pm?  My friends baby went down at 7.30pm and slept right through to 7.30am the next morning for 1 year!

it does make me laugh when someone says their baby slept right thru straight away..babies don't know the difference between night and day and they need feeding at least every 4 hours at first - a new born baby should not be left all night without a feed - maybe your friend is hard of hearing lol.

I think when they're tiny they sleep when they want to sleep, it is very hard to keep them awake if they don't want to and almost impossible to get them to sleep when they don't want to!  I think it's important to help them learn the difference between night and day (dark, quiet, no talking etc at night and lots of noise, interaction etc in the day) and feed them at regular intervals during the day and hope they get the hang of it!

I laughed when you said my friend must be hard of hearing - yes you are right-either that or she was just trying to wind me up by trying to show off that my baby wakes up 4 times in the night and hers is a good baby that sleeps right the way through.  I thought something wasn't quite right! lol  Hey never mind, its all a bit of fun.

I am 6 wks pregnant, going to have to go through all this again. Dreading every minute of it, especially the labour.

Awww hun i love to hear that peoples babies sleep all the way though it makes me smile and laugh inside. Both of my boys never slept though the night.

My first finally decided to sleep though the night at the age of 3yrs and my second well he's following in his brothers foot steps.

May i ask if your bf or bottle feeding? As i have heard that bottle fed babies seem to sleep better at night but i've had no proof. But i agree with the ladies above when they are new born i they sleep when they want too etc.

I have read though that when they are older the best times for kids to go to bed is between 7and 8pm.... i always aim for 6.45/7 as then they tend to be asleep by 8 lol i like to get some free time.

If I am not wrong newborns sleep at least 18 to 20 hrs a day, my wife checked with our doctor and apparently breastfeed babies tend to feed every 3 to 4 hours even at nights, and it is natural. We had sleepless nights for the first 3 months.

But my friends who bottle feed their infant, and they say that their baby slept for atleast 6 hours in the night, One of the reason is that formula milk is a little harder to digest compared to breast milk.

hope that was helpful.

Yup - I bottle fed my two girls, and they slept longer much quicker. Cameron was bf, and he fed every two hours, religiously, for the first few months. He was small when born, so was on a 'catch-up' I think. I plan to bf this one, so am preparing myself for possibly having baby 'attached' to me for the first few months! lol

xxx

No two newborns are the same - the sooner you realise that the easier it'll be. Let your own baby settle into a routine that works for the two of you and dont worry about what other people are doing.

My son was breastfed and slept through for a week when he was about 8 weeks old and I thought wow! It never happened again until he was 8 and a half months. He napped regually through the day and he woke normally 3 times through the night for feeds but always settled straight back into his cot (after the first 5 weeks when he didnt sleep at all).

Good luck!
