I had the merina coil - it was put it around 4 to 5 months after Edward was born. I got on ok with it but in trying to discover why my SPD had returned or got worse I had it removed. As it happens now I believe it had little or no effect on my SPD. My SPD started returning slowky from when Eds was 3and half to for months and it didnt get significantly worse when I had it put in, nor did I notice an improvement when I had it removed.
I will say be very careful who puts it and in and that they are very experienced at doing it and know your problems so your legs are open for the least amount of time. My GP was wonderful as although her surgery doesnt normally do the coil she got special permission to do me as she had done loads and understood my limitations.
I am considering having mine put back in as my PMT, period pains and general period symptoms were better with it. I havent found another method which benefits me.
My problem is like yours, putting extra hormones into my body scares me as the SPD might be triggered. I dont think enough, if any, research has been done to give us any better information.
Some research I have done has shown the link between hormones and SPD is actually not true. Certainly the link is actually with relaxin in pregnancy initially. The cause of SPD after pregnancy is more to do with lax ligaments and hypermobility. Progesterone is in the IUS device but in doses 1/7th strenght that are in the pill and many other contraceptive devices - have you used anything else?
I hope some of this has helped - if you are concerned then talk your concerns through with your consultant and see what they say.
Good luck
