I went to see my consultant about my wrist problems yesterday.

It was a wasted trip - he prodded and poked some more - checked my MRI and blood results and said he cant find a cause so he is refering me to the hand specialist for a second opinion and maybe steroid injections.

The xray had showed deterioration of 2 of the joints around my thumb and was showing signs of osteoarthritus already but no reason for the weakness in the wrist and pain in the wirst joint. The MRI also showed fluid around the thumb joints so that is definately going to be causing me problems.

They do think its to do with the hypermobility and they were all shocked when they did the test with how hypermobile my wrist joints are. But they said the MRI didnt show anything to cause the wrist pain.

Its making life so difficult with the depression, the SPD and the pain in my wrist. I'm just hoping the specialist will be able to give me some answers and some relief.

Hope you get some answers at the specialist Madz - you have enough to deal with, without more pain. Hopefully the appointment will come through quickly.

Hi Madz,

I've only just seen this post as we've just come back from holiday so I'm sorry for the delay in replying to you..

I'm really interested to hear that you're having problems with your wrists too, can I ask what symptoms you have and what you've been told so far?

Initially, I woke up thinking that I had been lying funny as my wrist felt like I had strained it or something.. (I was in the early stages of my second preg and I hadn't actually 'done' anything to it).  It was really sore to put any weight on it so I put on one of those tubi-grip things and hoped it would get better in a few days. Afetr a few weeks, it just seemed to get worse so I mentioned it during one of my obst visits and the consultant didn;t axamine it or anything, he just said that I has Carpal Tunnel and he me a splint to wear (I was having the pins & needles in my fingers and the swelling etc at night at this point and it had extended to both hands).  Once again, I was told it would away once I had the baby (along with the SPD -  and nedless to say it didn't).  The surgeon that did my first plating had a quick look at it (this literally involved touching my thumb to my pinkie and asking if I had any pain or numbness at any time - it was a quick consultation!) and decided to do the 'release' operation on my left hand with the plan to follow on with my right at a later stage (I needed at least one hand for my crutches).  Anyway, to cut a long story short.  It hasn;t helped and if anything, the one that he operated on is still the worst of the two so I'm in no hurry to have it repeated on my right.  I now find that I can put a lot of pressure on my wrists, like leaning on them or anything and I can;t hold a pen for long as my hand goes into a cramp.  Most of the pain/weakness is actually on the wrist joint itself and the only thing I have by way of 'treatment' are my splints which I purchased myself (they're far comfier than the NHS ones) but I found it really interesting that you have the severe SPD (or DSP) too and you also have wrist problems...

Hi Jennypenny, i also have the lingering spd and wrist problems but i'm also getting problems with my knees, ankles, hips (not pubis symphsis so an additional hurdel), shoulders, jaw etc.

I have been told it's down to joint hypermobility, keep using it or loose them... i had a very helpful chappy.

I struggle to grip, open and get aches and cramp like pains, can also sometimes be a shooting pain. My joints also grate and click.

I have been told that there is a link between hypermobility and spd lasting post birth etc but have not seen much evidence to show this....

What a shame they didn't 'find' anything.  Hope the specialist will be able to shed some light on it for you Madz.  I know it may seem daft but at least of you know the reason, it does seem easier to cope with.
