Hi,

i want to try and wean my 12 month old little girl off her milk bottles. She has two bottles a day one in the morning and then one to bed. She has three meals a day plus two snack times. She drinks water throughout the day from a sippy cup and a bottle for her milk.

I tried the other morning of putting her milk in a sippy cup,she had a few sips but wasnt really interested, i was strong and didnt give in and revert back to the bottle but was worried she didnt have much milk, although she did make up for it at every other meal.

does anyone have any tips or hints on how they done this or whos trying to do this at the moment. Ive looked at a few sites (mainly american) who have said i should of done this when i started weaning her :S have i left it too late or am i trying to early???

im confused!

any help would be gratefully recieved!

Hello!

Yes the experts do recommend you wean from the bottle early- but if she's only getting one bottle at night and one in the morning as a wake up/ settle thing and you are making sure her teeth are brushed after it then I'd not worry too much about it.  If you're really set on her having no bottles at all then you could try to wean her onto a bottle with a cone shaped teat like the ones from tomee tipee to make the transition easier for her- or use a softer teat training cup.  hth!  xxx

I agree with Lynie, the tommee tippee bottle to cup trainers are great.

Can she suck from a straw? We swapped my youngest son's bottle with a cup and a straw, I let him choose his own character straw and he was great, Never bothered.

I dont think you have left it too late, my eldest was 18 months before the bottle was gone completely, i had to bite the bullet and throw the bottles in the bin so there was no chance of giving in.  He soon forgot about it in a few days and happily took the milk from a cup. I think the problem was he used his bedtime bottle as a sleep aid and he found it hard to get himself to sleep without it.

You just have to persevere she get the hang of it soon.
