I bought my two boys pine bunk beds, but have only ever used them as single beds. We live in a 2 bed house and although they have a massive bedroom, I wanted to put the beds together, one so they have more floor space to play and two, to stop Louis getting into Harrison's bed.
The trouble is I'm frightened that Louis will attempt to climb the ladders and get on the top bunk and fall off, or better still Harry will fall off. They are 6 and 3 do you think they are old enough?
Louis goes to bed before harry anyway but I worry in case they act silly and they'll get hurt
Just wondering if anyone else's children have bunk beds and how you get on

hiya,bronia is 3 and has a cabin bed with the drawes,desk etc underneath and shes fine with it,she had a bunk bed in her bedroom when we lived with my ex for when his two older sons came to stay on a weekend and she was 2 then and used to climb up the ladder but i found she was more carefull with the height,i think so long as you explain that they arent safe for playing on they should be fine xx

I have had 2 bad experiences with bunk beds in my life not saying they aren't good because I do like them but I will tell you what happened. My brother and I had bunk beds I was 4 he was 3. He climbed on to my bed and I didn't want him there it was New Years Eve. I pushed him and he fell off and landed on his head on the edge of a chest of drawers. A ride in an ambulance and 12 stitches later he was fine, he just tells people he had a frontal labotamy. Hayley had a bunk bed in her room when Fran was little. Fran was 3 she climbed the ladder and slipped off landing in a heap at the bottom. When I got to her she was very upset. A trip in the car to the hospital this time, 1 X-Ray and 1 Plaster Cast on a green stick fracture next she was fine.

My lads have been in bunk beds for 6 months now. They chose to sleep in the same room.
Max being the oldest, is on the top bunk, but Tom will only sleep if he's allowed to fall asleep in the same bed as his brother. Once he's asleep I move Tom to the lower bunk.
He has spent a few nights on the top bunk because I'd forgotten to move him and he's survived! Tom doesn't move around much when he sleeps so I have faith that he wouldn't catapult himself over the bed. However, I do have a spare mattress under the bunk bed which is just out enough to soften his fall.

I think you're 6 year old will be fine, cos if he's anything like my DD was when she was six, they climb everything anyway, so he'll be used to watching his footing As for your LO, I suppose it depends on the individual child. If he's one of those kids that is generally good when it comes to doing as he's told (my DD was always great when she was that age, if Mummy said don't do that cos it's dangerous, Jess didn't do it) If he is generally good, then I would just probably sit them both down and talk them through why it's important that if they have bunk beds, that they don't jump or climb etc. Jess has had bunk beds for almost three years, but she's nearly nine. She's always been really sensible with them, taking it carefully when she's climbing up and down the ladder and sticking to the rule that there is no playing allowed on the top bunk. Our bunks have really sturdy guard rails at the top, so I'm assuming yours will too (do all bunk beds have to have guard rails now?) If not, I'd definitely invest in one before letting them sleep up top cos we all know how kids seem to have wrestling matches with their quilts in their sleepGood Luck in masking your decision anyway

my friends children are in bunk beds and there 2 and 6 years they have been fine my friends ladder does detach from the bunks though so when they are in the room just playing she will remove the ladder xx Jue xx

Hi my two share a room because they want to and they have bunk beds. It does give them more space overall and it does give them their own space.
My 7yr old has the top bunk and the only problem i have is with him peeking over the top to check on his 2yr old brother.
However the 2yr old doesn't try to climb the ladder (and he's always climbing), the first time he tried it i said no thats kieran's space he doesn't go in your bed.
It's been fine so far and they've had them a good 3 mths so far.... making beds is difficult and so is cleaning up the bits and bobs when poorly but dp does that lol.
I'd say go for it if they don't get on you can always change them back.

I don't have bunk beds but I do have a high bed with a desk and futon
underneath. It was bought for my daughter Nicola when she was 5 and
is now used by son who is 7. My youngest has climbed it a few times
over the years, but not often. I had bunk beds when I was younger. I
was on the bottom and my elder sister had the top bunk - I don't
remember any major incidents other than my sister throwing teddies at
from the top bunk to stop me from sleep talking!

I would love Lewis to have bunk beds as his room is tiny. Unfortunately, due to his lack of understanding and unawareness of danger, this simply isnt possible. The ideal is that Lewis would have the top bunk and grandma/nana/stepbrother would have the bottom bunk. Ah well - one can dream.....
