Hi everyone,

Not sure how I ended up here, but hoping there is someone that I can chat to?

I am 28 years old, 36 weeks pregnant and have been suffering from SPD since about week 16.   I say about week 16 as it took quite a long while for the midwife to stop dimissing me and syaing that it was somehing that I just had to put up with.

I am currently awaiting a c section on the 16th Ocotber to delivery my baby boy, i have opted for this as I am in lot of pain and dont feel that not having had more than 2hrs uninterupted sleep for months that I can cope with a 'normal' birth.

I am usign crutched around that house and a wheelchair when ever I go out.  Ia m taking the full dose of the pain killers that I have been given and using my tens machine when ever I can, but to be honest its not really touching the pain.

I have tried a belt from physio, hydrotherapy, accupunture, heat treatment, ice packs and eveything else I can think off.

I am now just waiting the 10 days till my section in the hope that will bring some relief.  I am ot sure how much longer I can take this constant pain

Just wanted a chat really

Hi Hun Firstly welcome to madmums.

I'm sorry you have had a mw who seems to have been stuck on the idea that it's something else (I’ve been there and brought the t-shirt) and it's a relief to find out something’s wrong even though it's a scary prospect especially with the pain that comes with it. I hope the next week flies by for you till your section and that you and bubs are well afterwards. Please don’t push yourself too much for a few months afterwards and keep up with the exercises.

Sounds like the physio you've been referred to has been on the ball, it’s a shame the belt hasn’t worked for you but it unfortunately doesn’t help everyone (it didn’t help me either). We do have a article here with some self help tips which might be useful to you and we also have a buddy system here where you can get one on one support, if you would like a more personalised approach.

Please don’t worry about having to use crutches and wheelchairs it’s more common than you’d realise. I’m sorry to hear the medication and tens machine isn’t doing much for you, as a post pregnancy spd suffer I’m using a wheelchair, crutches and am now on morphine meds, so I can understand the exhaustion that’s coming with the battle of the pain and mobility. Hope you get some relief soon hun and as for having a 'normal' birth you have to do whats right for you hun. I had a natural birth but induced as my consultant wasn't happy to do a section but after the first birth being natural and what went on with the mw (same one for the start of my 2nd pg who was 100% sure it was just a trapped nerve, hospitals disagreed) it really couldn't have been much worse. Good luck hun and i'm sure you'll be ok.

As for not being sure how much longer you can take the pain you’ll be surprised hunny how strong you are… I know I’m not alone on here by saying I still surprise myself some days that I’ve finished another day and the next one’s fast approaching. Are you getting much support from family and friends?

BTW I’m Tsena (27) and have 2 boys ages 7yrs and 2 ½ years and I live with dp in Cambridgeshire.

Big gentle hugs hunny, chat again soon xx

Hi there. I'm Maddy - mum to Edward who is 3 and a half. I am 24 and live with my husband and son in Cambridgshire.

I had SPD from around 8 weeks pregnant, fully diagnosed at 20 weeks. I was in your position - crutches and wheelchair bound. At 37 weeks I was admitted to hospital on morphine as the pain was just unbearable. I had a C section at 38 weeks as the morphine was affecting my baby and my pain free gap was so small there was a worry I wouldnt be able to open my legs to deliever my baby.

Unfortunately although I was pain free for the first 3-4 months post pregnancy then it started to come back. I would strongly recommend that post pregnancy you keep up the exersizes and keep seeing a physio if possible. I would also recommend finding a chiropractor who specialises in pregnancy related conditions so you can make sure it doesnt come back.

Saying that please remember most people do not get it after pregnancy. Be prepared to have some pain for around 6 months after the baby is born as the pregnancy hormones will still be floating around.

Read the article Tsena has pointed you to and look into the buddy scheme too.

Personally I am now in a bad place as I need surgery but I have an exceptionally bad case. I am now on Fentanyl patches (80x morphine strength) and am wheelchair bound a lot of the time. But I keep up with all the research and am still hoping to recover. I believe being positive is so important in beating this sort of thing.

I wish you all the best with the next 10 days and the birth. If you need any other advice, help or just a chat then just shout!

Hugs x

PS. Tsena is spot on - we are all stronger than we ever believed we could be. Like Tsena I often sit in bed amazed I have got through the day but also knowing I will get through tomorrow too and I will beat this one day soon!

Just wanted to say hello!

I've no real experience of SPD but there's loads of peeps on here who can help as you can see.  I had the beginnings of SPD when I was pregnant with my twins this time last year but had early intervention to prevent anything getting worse with a physio and it really helped.  It's such a miserable thing- my friend has just delivered a couple of weeks ago after being hospitalised with SPD.  The good thing is that after her section the spd is getting better.
