Hi

My son has just turned 6 months and now he's starting to want more filling foods.  Was just wondering if anyone has any tips or any advice as to what to give him.  I'm not too sure what he can have in his diet now that he is a bit older adn I'm wanting him to try different things!!

Many Thanks

Paula

Now he is 6 months old you can slowly wean him onto what ever you eat yourself but pureed.  I started mine on rusk with milk, I tried baby rice all 3 times and none of mine liked it but some babies do so you could try that.  I used to make my own baby food but you can use jars or packets if you don't have the time.  Butter nut squash was always very popular and easy to boil up and mash down.  Advocados are also very good and used to help babies that are a little underweight get a head start.  Gradually introduce new things over a period of time.  It is meant to take about 25 tastes of something new for a baby to recognise it and know if they like it or not so even if they appear not to like it at first persevere for a while as it might just be the new taste or sensation.

When I weaned DD 4 1/2 years ago some extra rules I was given were;

Milk used in foods should be full-fat until 12 months.

From 12 months semi-skimmed milk can be used in mash, custard, etc. but not as a drink until 24 months and no skimmed milk until aged 5 years.

Oily fish such as sammon only once a week for children.

White fish such as cod, haddock, skate, pollock are fine (not oily).

No shellfish, marlin, crab or lobster until aged 5 years.

However recommendations change so I stand to be corrected.

As MumSam said though generally blended/mashed adult foods are fine.

I used a mixture of jars and home made food with DD. I found jars are great for when out and about at a meal time, but DD would never eat them cold so I'd have to find places such as a certain fast food outlet or places with "baby stations" or bottle warmers where I or staff would heat up contents.

I also used to make batches of mash, white fish and vegetables which I could freeze in  small portions and heat up in the microwave.

You can also try finger foods from around 7 months like pieces of fruit, bread, cheese but be aware of choking hazards.

Best wishes.

paula,

You may want to start offering foods higher in protein as protein makes you feel fuller and for longer. Create purees based on a carbohydrate such as potatoes and rice and a protein such as fish or chicken. Egg can help but I wouldnt advise feeding egg until they are at least a year old.

If you are not making your own weaning foods, I do recommend it!

In addition to mumofone's rules, never add sugar or salt to your baby's food.

let me know if you need any recipes :)
