My four year old son has problems with constipation, he is on movicol prescribed by the doctor and I have cut out a lot of dairy products from his diet. He seems to be ok for a couple of weeks and then goes days without doing anything! It is becoming a real problem and wondered if any one else has experienced this and has any advice!

Hi sorry to hear you are having problems with your son. Our son is also 4 years old and we had similar problems until recently. Partly he didn't like to go and he didn't feel the need to go. We make sure he has fruit every day in his diet. I am not sure why you have cut dairy products from his diet, is he intollerant? I found that a cup of warm milk actually made our son go. Milk is a natural laxative.

Hello dee73, how long has this been going on with your son, does the movicol help keep him regular? My daughter had the same problem, We eventually found out it was mostly caused by her holding it and not wanting to stop what she was doing and sit on the potty or toilet.
We made her sit on the toilet for half an hour before bed time, and used laxatives prescribed by the doctor to retrain her bowl, it took a few weeks and getting the dosage right was a nightmare.
I'm not sure cutting out milk is a good idea, unless told to do so by a doctor.
I'm sorry i can't be more help.

This one is the general problem with this age of the children and the cure is very easy for that. There is one common thing every one can't adjust with the all the items a that's why some times they have to suffer some problems with the digestion process and they suffer from the constipation. So,don't worry and adjust with new diets and stop others diets from which you suffered.

I would also recommend a little prune juice or apple juice at meal time tooo-a lot of constipation is due to a reduced intake of liquid, so make sure he stays hydrated. Good luck, and it happened and happens to all of us.

Lots of fiber in the diet - fruits and vegies- can really help with constipation, whether in children or adult. Lots of fluids too - natural fruit juices and water.

Constipation in children is a common problem. It can
develop for a number of reasons and does not normally indicate anything
physically wrong with your child.
Child constipation can be
distressing for everyone involved and although it is natural to be
concerned, it is not usually serious and does not mean that they will
develop bowel problems in later life as a result of their constipation.
There are effective treatment options for constipation in children -
these will make your child feel better particularly if his or her
constipation is treated early.
