My kids have started at their new school ths week.  Katie brought home her new spellings yesterday and in my opinion they are a little too varied in difficulty but I also think a couple of the words are very difficult for a child that is only just 6.

Here are the words.....

fork, knife, mix, salad, cheese, ham, tomatoes, cucumber, chicken and ingredients

To me there is a huge difference between mix and ingredients.  Obviously there is a theme to the spellings but are these the normal level words for her age?

Sophie is now in P2 but in P1 she did get some quite long words home to practise. I was a bit shocked at the amount of homework they were expected to do but now we are in the swing of it, it dosen't seem so much now.

My mum is reaching retirement age after working as a primary school teacher throughout her life.

She says the varied difficulty levels in literacy and spelling are to try and ensure chilren get at least a small amount of success, rather than going from everything easy and getting it all correct to reaching a point were everything is hard and children giving all incorrect answers, which is not good for morale.

Tbh alot of those seem really hard for y1, my ds in y2 would would struggle with most of those, although he struggles bless him with the easy stuff!! but hes for this week where gem, gent, magic and giant. Has she tried to learn them or does she seem a little daunted by them, if she gets worried then maybe have aword with her teacher. My son does like to get them all right and loves to get a sticker for that. Good luck xxx

I've come across adults who can't spell ingredients! :-)

Some of the work my niece comes home form school with I think is
very hard for her age, particularly maths - they seem to push children
much harder these days.

Have you raised it with the school?
