My 6 year old (nearly 7) still likes to make mud pies and will put mud on her face, paint herself, and take her shoes and socks off to play in a muddy puddle if not watched. I can't leave her in the bathroom or kitchen or there would be no soap/shampoo/ washing up liquide left
She is very bright and really energetic but shouldn't she have grown out of this type of messy play by now?

Sounds like she is "experimenting" with textures etc. Try and steer her towards a more acceptable form of this play, like with silly putty etc.
