I am starting to get really down about weaning Edward. He doesnt want to know! He has a couple of mouthfuls then squeezes his lips together and if I keep trying he crys.

I feel like I'm going round in circles and he's never going to eat!

What can I do!???!

It is really depressing me and I dread trying (I do stay upbeat so it doesnt rub off on him).

Aw hun - I'm feeling a bit like that with Lily, although she has been a bit better this weekend.

I have noticed she does prefer eating things she can hold herself.

I know its hard but hopefully he'll get there soon

((((((Hugs))))))

um...do you give him milk first?  Ellie doesn't seem to understand that food will fill her up and stop her being hungry (because it takes longer than milk I think?) so I always give her milk first to fill her up a bit and then give her the food -

When do you try feeding him?  it could be that he isn't at his hungriest then? Ellie only has a small portion for breakfast - she generally just isn't v hungry then

what food have you tried?  have you tried jars?  these are usually very bland and don't have a strong taste so he may eat these better than homemade stuff?

have you tried it at different temps or consistencies?

has anyone else tried to feed him?  it might be that he knows he'll get milk from you and so he refuses the food?

um...not sure what else - I'll consult the Annabel Karmel bible and see what she has to say on it....

Think greedys said it all

I had 2 change ryans spoons, he'll only eat off rubber tipped 1s like tommee tippee, not hard plastic 1s. Also ryan prefers his savourys really warm, if its cold by the end of the bowl he wont touch it. He'll only take yoghurt & fruit cold & he much prefers finger foods 2 being spoon fed

Hope u crack it soon

Rianna will only eat if she has a spoon to hold too, she then mimicks me by trying to feed herself. And when she is having an off day and wont touch her spoonfed food i give here finger food, like toast and she really loves it.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Madz, I had a look in the NHS Birth to five book last night and there is a good section in there about weaning with some good tips for getting your child to eat - I assume you got given that book from the HV?  Let me know if not and I'll PM you...

and I was thinking about this last night (sad I know!) and I wondered if you do try and give him the food before his milk, maybe he is worried he won't get the milk if he eats his food?  they are clever little things - just a thought anyway..

The main advice given by most things I've read is that if your child appears to have had enough or is not interested, just take the food away and either try again later or just wait until the next meal - trying to coax them into eating it will quickly make them realise that it is a good way of getting attention and they play up to this - pesky kids!  lol

Madz, my friends little boy is like that, he was soley bf and wasnt interested in any solid food, so she started putting her breastmilk into everything she gave him, then eventually put less and less milk in each time until there was no milk in it, sometimes it worked and other times it didnt its all trial and error i think greedy is your best bet i know its difficult but keep with it he'll get there soon enough.

Thanks girls. There is come great advice here and I'll give it all a go. I tried him with toast this morning but my nan phoned and i've over cooked it a bit so he wasnt that interested. He did suck some cheese though and I think it helped I was eating too.
