Ever since Fred was a newborn, he has stopped breathing for a few seconds, then gulps in air! Once I bought the fisherprice swing, he was always inthat, and it stopped, but when I lie him on his back under the playgym, he's started off again! I don't feel worried enough to go to the docs, but am curious as it's just been funny to hear until yesterday, when he did it 4 times in 2 hours. On top of this I've started trying to get him to lie on his front so see if he can start pushing himself up, but he doesn't seem to want to be there, he's much happier on his back, or upright, but with his weight he won't be able to use most of the toys that actually support his head and neck. Although he has some kind of control, he's still very wobbly, and I'm worried some of the toys I use ie the bumbo, is not gonna help him,
Sorry I must just be having a bad day and all the niggly little things that usually seem ok, suddenly feel bad!

Awww cheer up hun we all have days like that why not just mention it to your HV and see what she says next time you see her. My dp's neice stops breathing in her sleep shes 4 and has never once slept thru the night as a result of this but i think she has some sort of under lying problem as her tongue is too big for her mouth (dont ask) Louis absoluetly screams blue murder if you try to lye him on his stomach but i think hejust too chubby to be doing that ha ha id just mention it and see what she says let us know x

Hi Vickimom,
Sounds like Fred has a condition called 'apnoea' (ap Knee
ah) where when you lie on your back or sleep on your back your
tongue obstructs your airways and momentarily you stop breathing. It's
nothing to worry about many people suffer with it, usually old men who
sleep on their back and snore terribly! I'm sure most of us who post
here have fallen alseep on their bak and 'tripped up the kerb' and
woken themselves up, tis is the same sort of thing. A good tip is to
prop a rolled
up towel under his mattress/playmat which will give him just a little
bit of lift to stop him being completely flat. HTH
Jack hates laying on his front too but I'm mean and make lay on his front twice a day for at least five minutes! He has to learn and unfortunaely it looks like it's going to be the hard way!

I agree Mention this to your hv or doctor, I'm always mentioning the most silly things, No harm in just asking for some advise or asking a few questions .xxx

yep my ds was the same and alot of mums i know said the same about their kids. sometimes it can be an indication of a heart murmer but this will usually have been picked up at birth and 98% of heart mumers are nothing to worry about anyway.
my ds doesnt have a heart mumer and he grew out of it when he was around 3 months old. if it happens blow on your LOs face and that will get him to breath again.
it can be scarey but its probably nothing to worry about. mention it to your hv if you are worried.

this happens to svannah alot i took her to 4 different doctors as i was so concerned they told me that it is probably asthma but they wont diagnose this in a baby under 1 she hasnt got betta and i told my hv just yesterday and she told me to go back to gp. its very scary and i feel 4 u good luck darlin!

Ollie puts his hands out to the sides and clenches his fists, screws up his eyes, goes bright red and holds his breath when you are doing something he doesn't want you to do. He doesn't do it every day and mostly when he is tired. He does it sitting in his pram, laying on his mat, under his play gym, in his cot anywhere that he decides he doesn't want to be. Only lasts a few seconds.
My friends baby actually holds her breath until she passes out from temper.
If you are worried about it I know your hv isn't your best friend but it might be worth mentioning it to them or seeing your gp to put your mind at rest.

It's a new sound! God he had me worried, i called the hv and she said to watch him, so i did, he hreathes out then waits a few seconds then gulps air, but the noise he makes is scary, when i explained this to the hv she laughed, apperently when they find a new noise they copy it time and time again! And he has done it an awful lot since i started laughing at him doing it, little monkey!
