A couple of you madmums have been asking when my story was gonna be published. It has been...........a few years ago lol. Here it is-
"I jumped up out off bed and rushed to the loo to be sick. Dont worry i said to my dp i will be fine. Just like this because of the pg. Being sick all day and all night was just normal for me. We were expecting our 1st baby and we were thrilled. I didnt feel too bad and was quite well from 14 weeks till about 20 weeks.
At 20 weeks a woke in the worsed pain i had ever been in and rushed to the dr. I thought i was losing my baby as i could not even bare him to touch me. He called an ambulace and within the hr i was in hospital beeing monitored. Tests showed an infection in my kidneys and went home with medication.
At 30 weeks i was a whale lol but loved feeling all of the movemets of my lo. Again one morning i woke up in agony and thought it had to be labour. My dp was already at work so i phoned his mobile and left a message. Then i phoned my mum lol. Thats funny because she lives in Manchester and i live in North Wales so it wasnt like she could pop round to help me out. I phoned an ambulance. That was my first experiance of gas and air but it was not even helping a little with the pain.
In hospital i had 2 mw's waiting for me and after an examination i was told that i was not in labour. A relief? Yes, but what the hell was this pain. Onr dr came in and told me i was fine and to GO HOME. One mw there was not happy with that and asked me if i would stay to see aother dr and i said of course i would. Another dr came and diagnosed appendicitis straight away and told me i needed surgery now. If i had of gone home a probably would have lost my baby and it would have been touch and go for me. Needless to say the 1st dr who told me to go home got a right telling of and right in front of me in my room.
The dr explained that if my appendix burst the poison released would be life threatening for me and my baby as it would cause a potentally deadly infection called peritonitis.
I was worried that sugery would harm my baby. It was explained to me that i could go into labour during the op so they would have to deliver my baby at 30 weeks so the special care unit were on stand by from when i went into surgery. Then my dp arrived and i told him if anything didnt go to plan to help the baby 1st. He told me not to be silly but we knew that a decision like that could have to be made. 40 mins later my appendix was out and i was waking up and knew i was still pg and a mw came in to let me listen to the heartbeat which made me feel a million times better.
My scar was shocking 4ins long right across my belly all red and horrid. I asked to see the mw that got me to see another dr. I was told by the dr she had saved mine and my babies life as the surgeon who removed my appendix said it was the worst he had ever seen in his working life and for it to be in a pg women was shocking.
When my contractions finally started just under 2 weeks passed my due date the pain was no where near as bad and the gas and air was super fab pmsl."
So ladies that was my story with a few bits in that were left out and about a million times less dramatic than it sounded in the mag lol. Here are some facts.
FACTS
What is an appendix?
A thin sac about 3 ins long attached to the intestine in the lower right of your abdomen. It has no known function.
What is appendicitis?
When the appendix becomes inflamed. The cause is often unknown.
What are the symptoms?
Worsening painnear the belly button which travels. Also causes sickness and a temp.
What treatment is available?
Surgery
What if you are pg?
Mr Pat Obrien consultant in obstetrics at University College Hospital London says " Appendicitus in pg is very difficult to diagnose as the pain is not on the normal place as the organs get pushed around because of the large womb. It is very tricky to remove during pg and most dr's opt to deliver babies first if the pg is past 35 weeks"
Is general anaesthetic dangerous during pg?
No and it does not increase chance of miscarriage.
