My baby is showing signs that she is ready to start weaning. She picks up anything she can and puts it in her mouth. She starting to want feeding every 2 hrs instead of 3 to 4 hrs. Is this enough to start weaning? I'm a first time mum and don't have much info on weaning. I gave her half a spoon of mixed veg from a jar today (1st time) and she really enjoyed it. She's 3 and a half months old. Should i wait longer? I'm bf. Any advice on weaning would be great, Thanks xxx

sounds like your lo is ready to wean, but you'll know for certain when it's time.  Aimee will be 15 weeks tomorrow (today now lol) and i started to hive her rusk last week.  She now has a dinner and pud at lunch time and rusk for bed.  start slowly with blander foods like baby rice and rusk then work your way up.  it should be fine.  let us know how u get on

hiya, sorry im gonna disagree with straw! sorry girl!

i think you should wait for a while. there are other signs for weaning. can your LO sit up unsupported? is she around 6 months old? has her tongue thrust reflex went away??

for bf babies, all they need for the first 6 months of life is mummys milk. it has amazing health benefits for them if you can hold off till 6 months, and weaning too early can actually UNDO some of the goodwork you have done by breastfeeding. although, saying that i weaned my LO today on solids (gave him pear which i cooked myself) and i just mashed it loosely, still lots of lumps in it. (if you wait till 6 months, you can skip the puree stage and move straight to lumpy food and finger foods)  he is gonna be 6 months in 4 days though. but he was chewing when the rest of us were eating. the past few days he has been a differnt baby - he's been so grouchy, feeding like mad, waking up loads during the night and generally not being the smiley little man he used to be. so i knew it was time to wean him as he can sit up unsupported and is starting to crawl too.

if you are egar to give your LO solids cos she is taking an interest, how about makin a breastmilk icelolly?? just frozen breastmilk. she will love chewing on that (keep an eye on her cos she is so young and let it melt a bit first so she doesnt get burned) and feel like she is parcipating in meal times.

ashton started taking an interest in people eating at around 3 months but im so glad i waited till now. i know that he will be healtheir cos of it.

the case is different for ff babies. they can take solids from around 4 months i think.

there is an interesting article which you may find useful! hope i helped a bit. sorry my advice clashes so much with yours straw! im sure lannynewmum will do what she thinks is best

I agree that it is better to wait, both my girls atarted to chew everything and get hungrier at around 3 months, it could be a sign of teething or that they need more milk, it is best to ait until your lo is around 17wks b4 giving them solids as their gut is not formed properly and you can sometimes do more harm than good.

saying that a mothers intuition is best so if you really feel strongly that your lo is ready, have a chat with your hv first and get their advice as that what would be best to start with and how best to start off, remember that you only need to start with one of 2 tsp's a day for the first wk or so.  hth and i hope you havent felt that i have ranted too much.

im putting daisy on solids at 4 months my other 2 were already on solids by now babys all grow at diff rates dale was so hungry i was told to put him on solids at 8 weeks

if you feel your baby is ready then go ahead

daisy isnt as ready as my other 2 were at this age

if your happy and lo is happy thats the main thing just take it slow see how you go

on this subject you will get loads of diff advise from peeps with reasons for y u should or shouldnt at the end of the day its up to u

you know ur child better then anyone if you feel shes ready then i would say she must be

i dont understand

can your LO sit up unsupported? is she around 6 months old?

these arent signs of a baby being ready to be weaned  the age of 6 months is a guide line doesnt mean it suits all babys, and i spose if a baby can sit up means they can be fed in a highchair ??

best of luck hun let us know how you get on

xx

If you feel your baby is not getting enough from the milk try talking to hv first. Each baby is different, what might suit 1 baby may not suit another. my friend was told by her Doctor to put lo on solids and she was only 7 wks old..

there is a forum on weaning  by Mumsam it shows up on the right hand side of screen have a look on that...

Well thats my opinion but at the end of the day it your Baby..

Good luck Helen C

sorry, didn't mean to cause such different opinions.  I guess it is different for bf babies than it is for ff babies.  Guess the best thing is to speak to your hv, see what she says.  All babies are different and require 'more' at different ages.  Good luck hun

well amy slept fpr 6hrs straight last night instead of the usual 3  to 4 hrs. Hopefully this was because of the food i gave her and it will continue. I gave her it around 5 pm. She hasn't been sick or grumpy or anything. She seems quite happy. I also forgot to mention that she stares intently at people's food and at them whilst they are eating. She is always trying to pull herself into a sitting position and can sit upright by her self if i support her  bum and legs. I think i will continue with weaning. Thanks for all your advice.
