hi ladies!

well today has been very eventful, i saw my mw first thing and told her about the leg pain i have been getting, she rang the gp who saw my straight away. he referred me to the local hospital, where i was waiting for hours to see a dr lol!

anyway the dr said he didnt think i had anything wrong but the nurse had already taken my blood so i waited another 2 hours for the results and my blood is showing signs of a dvt so i have to go back first thing in the morning for a ultrasound on my leg!

has anyone else had a dvt in pregnancy? what do they do to get rid of it?

luv Tilly x

If my memory serves me right this is correctable by wearing support stockings!  I'm not 100% sure and have never had that problem!  Mine are usually the opposite my blood doesn't clot during pregnancy!

Oh no Tilly that's not nice for you, I hope you are not in too much pain.  I haven't had a dvt myself but I do know a bit about how they might treat it, they will obviously choose the treatment they feel is best for you.  After the ultrasound if it confirms the dvt they will probably want to give you heparin injections.  Heparin is safer than warfarin when you are pregnant as it does not cross the placenta so the baby will not be affected.  You will have to have regular blood tests so that they can monitor the thickness of your blood as they won't want to thin it too much as that can cause you problems at birth.  They normally give injections instead of tablets as that is safer for baby, they may show you how to inject yourself, don't worry it is a very very thin small needle and normally given in the stomach but as you are pregnant they may give it in the arm.  The place where you inject will get a big bruise that isn't normally painful it's just where the blood is thinner under the skin from the heparin.  The other thing they may give you to ware are compression stockings, which aren't particularly attractive but very affective in preventing further dvt's.  The heparin won't cure the dvt but it will prevent further ones growing and also the present one getting any bigger.

The other thing to consider is it's not very advisable to take the contraceptive pill once you have had a dvt as it is known the contraceptive pill puts you at higher risk of dvt.

I hope this gets sorted for you quickly. hth

hey, i had suspected dvt when i was 6 weeks gone.. it was soooo painfull.

I went to the hospital who ran the usual tests and was put on the blood thinning injections, and im not gonna lie, they HURT!!!

After a couple of days of going back n forth to the hospital (i wouldnt stay in as i had taylor to look after) they said nothing is wrong with me and said i must have pulled a ligament or summin.. i querried it as the pain had started at the very top of my leg and over time travelled all the way down to my foot, plus the injections were helping. they said they knew what they were talking about etc.. normal i know best situation.

two days after being discharged from the hospital care i was still in agony and couldnt walk on my leg so i went to the out of hours emergency clinic... and guess what.... i had a infection of the vein... not so serious as DVT.. but still quite bad.

Soooo, if u do need to have the injections, refuse to have them in ur belly, i did and they put them in my arm instead..

Not sure why i have just typed all that out cause its not DVT.. ah well....

Tilly I havent had DVT but I was high risk at the end of my pregnancy with Edward due to being bed bound.

I had to wear the very atractive stockings Sam described and have regular Heperin injections to thin the blood. I was given the injections in my arm and they sting a little but to be honest I was feeling rather like a pin cushion at that point so didnt really notice.

Good luck - I hope it is a false alarm but just try to relax whatever the outcome.
