Having seen so many different ideas on here and having some of my own dilemmas, I phoned a helpline to find out why our babies shouldn't be weaned early!

This is what I was told: It is the governments way of tackling obesity in children.  When I asked this same person, whether a couple of spoons of baby rice would stretch a childs stomach, or 16oz of baby milk in 2 hours, I was told if you are feeding them them 8oz every 2 hours, it's not good for their stomach, as it is stretching your baby's stomach to have that much milk in it, which in turn will mean it needs more to fill it up, which goes round in circles.  This was the advice given to me be a leading company in baby milk, and they stated obviously it would be better for our company to encourage you to give your child milk, but in those quantities it would be more harmful in the long run.

THAT IS WHY WE ARE ADVISED AGAINST FEEDING EARLY

Obviously I am not giving you medical advice, and am not suggesting you do feed your lo's early, but I thought that every mom had a right to know what I found out in a day's phone calls.  And believe me took alot of doing to get anyone to admit that it was more harmful, but if your baby is showing weaning signs, And only you as a mother can tell, then follow your instincts.

i agree hun, i knew it was time to wean aimee when she drained an 8oz bottle and wanted more soon after.  I started with half a rusk at lunch time 2 weeks ago, (she was 13 weeks then) and she now has half a tim of dinner and half a tin of pudding at lunch time and half a rusk for bed.  She is extremely comfortable on this.

I fed all my kids much earlier than Aimee, she just wasn't ready for it as early.  None of the 3 are over weight and all have excellent appitites and eat anything you put infront of them.

you'll know when you're baby is ready for weaning, be it 6 weeks or 6 months.

I also agree go by what you think is right.. I'm sorry but babys dont come out with a manual telling you what to do.........You have to work that one out for yourself... we dont always get it right no matter what we do!!

I've read alot of the research too. Yes, early weaning is linked to obesety
and allergies- but I've not come across that it is due to the stomach being
streached. I've read that it's because a baby's digestive system is only
suited to milk as that's all it can properly absorb before 4 months. They
go through "growth spurts" too, that means they can go through a couple
of days drinking non- stop; which is completely natural. It is linked to
breast feeding as mum's milk naturally changes every few weeks to suit
the needs of the baby.

The enzymes present in the gut mature as the baby gets older and so
they are ready for weaning around 5 or 6 months.

Babies have a natural "tounge thrust" reflex which pushes out some of the
food if you try to give it to them too early- this of course can be
overcome with mum's persistance!

I'm just writing this to present another side of the weaning debate- not
to diss anyone's beliefs.

Every baby is different- and every mum knows their baby best. Also
some people always try to tell you to do the opposite is best from what
you want to do! Every aspect of baby rearing is filled with conflicting
advice-
it's a minefield!
