I started Ellie on baby rice when she was about 20 weeks - I started because she was waking up loads in the night and I thought it was hunger but weaning did nothing to improve the situation..

The government are now saying wait till baby is 6 months old before weaning, when taylor was a baby it was 4 months...

tbh, its down to the child, if there not satisfied with just milk for food then why not.

Taylor was just a couple weeks shy of 4 months when he had baby rice for the first time, it was around the same time he started to sleep through the night too... concequence????

I would just stick to baby rice for the first month or so, leave the rusks till he is a bit older as they are quite lumpy when mashed up with milk.

Its up to you and what you think your baby wants. Is he on hungry baby formula? As that might be worth a try first. Is he showing signs of being ready? Interested in your food, waking at night when wasnt before, etc.

My main advice is dont rush it! I weaned Edward at 16weeks on advise of the hv. It turned out he wasnt ready for weaning just having a major growth spurt. It was my biggest parenting mistake to date as I now have a daily battle to feed him. I believe if I'd waited he'd be much happier.

Good luck.

Reccomendation states that you dont need to start your baby on solids until 6 months, but every baby is different and needs to start weaning at different times.

When my eldest was a baby, they said to start weaning at 4 months, but she was really hungry from about 12 weeks.  I started her on baby rice and rusk and she was great.  I did the same with my next two, though when it came to Aimee, she wasn't ready until about 5 months.

None of my kids are overweight, have eating difficulties or anything else.  All I'd say is you'll know when the time is right for weaning, and if it doesn't suit you both first time, leave it a couple of weeks and try again.

Good luck...the messy times start when the weaning does.

I found that with my older 3, giving the last feed at night of the white stuff was excellent in keeping them on the bottle and not on solids, however I did start Fred at 6 weeks!  I know that with Fred he was always hungry, and once I gave him breakfast at 6 weeks he was fine!  It was just really different.  I'd never recommend giving baby solids that early, and I really didn't like doing it myself, but it worked for him.  But then Fred has been different to all 3 of my others, and I'm hoping the new one when he arrives is more like the first 3!  I don't htink I could solid feed again that early even if I was ordered too, it's just not right!  HOwever each baby is different, and I went through a week of hell with Fred before finally doing the one feed, and wished I'd done it earlier.

But as has already been said you can only go by what you think, and what your health visitor helps you with!

I started Ryan on baby rice at exactly 11 weeks, he was on SMA gold & continued on that until he turned 1

After 3 failed days on baby rice i tried him with 1/4 rusk & he demolished it, so obviously he just didnt like the taste of baby rice

I continued with the rusk until he was 14 weeks by which point he was on half a rusk a day, this is the age i had originally intended 2 wean him

I then started him on the baby jars - veg 1s only for about 4 weeks but mixing between them & rusk then i gradually introduced other savoury flavours

Didnt give him any of the puddings until he was around 6 months cause i was worried he'd develop a taste for sweet things - luckily even now veg is his favourite & he doesnt really like sweet things

Id say go with ur instinct, if hes not happy he'll soon let u know

For formula fed babies around 4-6mnths is good for breastfed babies anywhere from 6-12mnths is now recommended.  Personally I left it until after the first lot of injections was over as they feel quite poorly with the 3 lots of injections and it just puts you back a bit every time they have them.
