hi all, liam is 6 weeks old now, when i went on hols last week my nan kept giving him a bottle everytime he cried and i didnt get to feed him as often as i wanted..now he is expecting this amount of formular all the time, he takes 8oz at a time!! I am only feedin him 2 times a day once in the mornin and once at night and im really worried that my milk is going to dry up... im not ready to give up yet i wanted to go at least 3 months, is there anything i can do to build the supply back up so i can feed him more from me rather than a bottle, he isnt content after a bottle whereas he is from me, but during the day if i try n feed him he seems unsettled and frustrated almost as if there isnt anything coming out.... also noticed that when i used to go for about 5 hours without feeding him my boobs would get a spontaneous let down and be engorged but im not getting that anymore please please help me! Feeding Liam has started to help me bond with him as i havent been able to due to depression and his crying all the time and i finally feel that when hes feeding im bonding more i dont want to let go yet things are only just starting

There's a section in the Baby Whisperer book, where Tracy Hogg tells how it's a myth that a mother can't go back to breastfeeding after the baby's got used to bottles. She cites cases, and describes how best to go about it.

It's late, and I swore I wasn't going to reply to any posts; just read'n'run, but I identify with your problem, because I went through something similar, so just had to let you know there IS hope!!

I've lent my copy of the book to a pregnant friend, so can't quote stuff at you, but will be in touch again tomorrow, with support and suggestions!

In the meantime, drink plenty of water and eat lots of protein!!! Oh, and stress will affect your let-down! Chill!! THERE IS HOPE!

B.x

Hello Snibbug!

Don't worry at all. Your milk won't dry up completely unless you stop
feeding completely. The more your wee one feeds, the more milk you'll
produce as your body makes milk on a supply and demand basis. The
more you put your wee one to the breast, the more milk your body will
make. Sometimes the baby will go through wee growth spurts when
they want to go to the breast more often and will seem to be less
satisfied, but this will calm down. Also, as time goes on your breasts
will not be as engorged as they were at the begining, as they'll adjust to
the pattern of feeding that you and baby will follow.

Oh- ment to say I fed both my wee ones and will soon be training to be
a "community mother", that means I'll be helping other mums establish
and continue breastfeeding. I know a wee bit because `i've been part
of a breastfeeding advice group for the past 4 years- if you need any
help at all please pm me-

xxx

As long as you make sure you eat as well as you can you'll be fine.
Just think, people with really poor diets in the Third World can breast
feed. Being stressed out can interfere with your milk production so try
to relax (Gawd- I know that's hard to do when you've got a family)
When you're feeding get yourself into a comfy position and have a nice
cool drink to hand and enjoy the special close time with your wee one.

I did breastfeed both my monsters, I had no problems with feeding Natasja, in fact I felt more like Daisy the Cow than a brand new mummy.  Isla was a different kettle of fish altogether...initially I had no problems, but then hubby was at home with me for the first six weeks, which was bliss.  Then he went back to work at the end of his paternity leave, and needless to say doing school runs and new baby took their toll on me.  My milk didn't dry up as such, but I couldn't keep up with Isla as she was a complete pig...my hv suggested doing both bottle and breast to take the pressure off me as I was getting more and more upset about it.  That worked fine, I could then feed her properly a few times a day from the breast, and fill her up at other times with the bottle.  However, hubby went away for 4 months when she was only 2 months old and needless to say, that was the end of bf for me, which I did get upset about...hv said it was due to stress and not to beat myself up about it...at least I had managed to do the best that I could do for her.

All you can do is drink lots, try to keep yourself relaxed and try to do the best you can, if its only two feeds a day from the breast, those two feeds are better than no feeds at all if that makes sense.

glad you seem to be getting there bug, I was going to say with this weather, it is even more important to drink lots of water as you're probably sweating more than usual...so just drink as much as you can stand to and I'm sure you'll soon be leaking all over the place lol - as for eating, you should aim to eat a healthy balanced diet with 5 portions of fruit and veg a day - I was told to steer clear of fruits that make you go to the loo a lot (like prunes) as this can give baby the runs too - you are doing really well!!
