I've got my contraception consultation with the nurse tomorrow and was wondering if anyone has the contraceptive implant?

I've heard that it's very good with hardly any side effects.  I want a long term contraception with no weight gaining side effects.

How long does it last for? Can you feel them in your arm?

I was due to have this after Rachel was born.  In the end i could'nt have it done as i have liver problems and it says not to have it if you have liver function problems.

Hope it goes well for you hun.

Love Trudi.  xx

I dont really know anything about the implant babe, sorry. Have you tried googling it. My personnal opinion on weight gain is that no contraception has to make you put on. The hormones in the contraception make you want to eat more or be picky and have a sweet tooth but if you get in control of that with a healthy balanced diet then I dont see why you would put weight on. Maybe Im wrong and its a chemical thing but I know a few people on the injection and the only ones to have gained weight are the ones that dont follow a good diet xxxx

I know two girls who are on the implant. When i asked them about it they thought it was gteat. These girls are very slim, one of them even has a 7 year old daughter and works shift so her diet wouldn't be the best. I think these girls are genitically thin tho.

when I asked one girl could she feel it she said she could at the start but after a while she got use to it. she actually showed it to me. It was like a thin strip under her skin.

I think with contraception every one is different and what suits one lady will not suit the other. Its all trile and error.

I think it lasts 3 years.

Best of luck, I hope it works out.

It lasts the same amount as the coil mate.  So I think thats 5 years. Its inserted just under the skin, so may feel a bit lumpy to begin with, but then its like anything once you get used to it, you don't notice it.  It works the same as the pill with slow release hormones into your system.  I was thinking about going onto it, however the doc couldn't guarantee me that it would control my periods...so we agreed to stick with the pill as we know that works!  Not bothered overly much about the  contraception side of things...the RAF does that bit for us pmsl, my major thing is keeping my periods under control!!!  Don't beat yourself up about the possibility of weight gain...its taken me 7 years to get back into shape(ish), you've spent the last 3 years pregnant and having babies...so don't panic it'll happen!  Yeay its Thursday....manana Friday.....brrrrmmmm brrrmmm screeech hola chica!!

My doctor advised me against it as she had had lots of people having them removed due to not being happy with it. I have the depo injection which is the same hormone but injected every 3 months and at least with that you can stop without having it removed.

Weight gain is one of the side effects but you wont know until you have it done whether it will affect you. I have also found the injection has made me quite depressed but I'm running out of options in the contraception department so I'm sticking it out. Although huge bonus is my periods have stopped!

Have you considered the coil?

Oh missed this thread - a bit late to b giving u advice now

my cousin got the implant & hated it cause it gav her pregnancy symptoms which upset her cause she'd recently suffered a m/c, it then took many attempts over 3 months to remove it from her arm & she's been left with a massive scar

the only contraception iv used is the pill

Wot did u decide in the end?

Arghhh turned up for my appointment only to be told they had forgotten to book me in-the plonks!  How could they forget lil ole me!!

Anyhow, got another one set up for tuesday.

Couldn't have the coil as the thought of it turns my stomach.  I'm funny like that.  Going to chat to the nice nurse about the different contraceptions and then make my mind up.  It has been useful learning about your experiences with different ones though.  Thank you.  xxx
