There are times when I am so glad to live in good old Great Britian and this is one of them.

Breast not best for all readers

Article from: Agence France-Presse

READERS of a US parenting magazine are crying foul over the publication's latest cover depicting a woman breastfeeding, with some calling the photo offensive and disgusting.

"I was shocked to see a giant breast on the cover of your magazine," one woman from Kansas wrote in reaction to the picture in Babytalk, a free magazine that caters to young mothers.

"I was offended and it made my husband very uncomfortable when I left the magazine on the coffee table."

Her reaction was among some 5000 letters the magazine received in response to a poll to gauge reader sentiment about Babytalk's August cover photo, which shows a baby nursing.

Several readers said they were "embarrassed" or "offended" by the Babytalk photo and one woman from Nevada said she "immediately turned the magazine face down" when she saw the photo.

"Gross, I am sick of seeing a baby attached to a boob," the mother of a four-month-old said.

Another reader said she was "horrified" when she received the magazine and hoped that her husband hadn't laid eyes on it.

"I had to rip off the cover since I didn't want it laying around the house," she said.

A national television program also ran a segment on the controversy, interviewing several people in New York who expressed disgust over the cover photo.

The picture in Babytalk was aimed at illustrating the controversy surrounding breastfeeding in the United States, where a national survey by the American Dietetic Association found that 57 per cent of those polled are opposed to women breastfeeding in public and 72 per cent think it is inappropriate to show a woman breastfeeding on television programs.

Babytalk executive editor Lisa Moran said though most of those who responded to the poll about the cover photo gave the magazine a thumbs up, she was surprised that some 25 per cent expressed outrage.

"There is a real puritanical streak in America," Moran said.

"You see celebrities practically baring their breasts all the time and no one seems to mind in this sort of sexual context.

"But in this very natural context of feeding your child, a lot of Americans are very uncomfortable with it."

She said the controversy was all the more surprising in light of concerted efforts by the US government and health professionals to encourage women to breastfeed.

"Everyone is saying that breastfeeding is best for baby, but there is so little support for it in public," Moran said.

She said the Babytalk cover photo marked the first time a major parenting magazine in the United States had dared to break the taboo about showing a woman's breast and the outrage it had prompted was not about to discourage editors from doing it again.

"This hasn't scared us off at all," Moran said. "We're thrilled and hopefully this will help women get more support for nursing."

I am speechless!

I can't believe the comments made by some people!

As it says there are women plastered all over the tv and magazines wearing hardly anything and thats ok - but a picture of a very natural act is seen as "inappropriate"!!!

It saddens me that people find the image offensive

As you say though Sam just glad we don't live over there

How awful! I wanted to Bf Ds but had no support and everyone I knew bottlefed because they thought it was gross! I will be breastfeeding this baby whether people like it or not! At the end of the day it  is the best for baby, natural and many many years ago was the only thing you could do! The world today is rather odd, you can see scantily clad women everywhere but to get your boob out to feed your baby is seen as disgusting?!?!?!?

I was lucky feedign jess i never once had an issue form anyone when I fed her in public but i was very discret and i still feel there si to much presure to be so discret it cna make you stressed when in public.

I get so mad with things like the article and i feel for any human who actually has  a problem with b/feeding yet msot ppl who quite happily go all goey eyed at a puppy feeding off it's mother.

Lets make breast less of a sexual issue i say.....and reclaim the practical use of them.

I fed my two...my arguement was 'have boobs, will travel!'  If i was out in a crowd they got a 10 second warning...going to do daisy.  Not that they had a choice, if they didn't like it, quite simple don't look.  I found that the blokes were fascinated...but not in a sexual way more curious than anything.  I didn't feel like they were perving which was great...not that they could see anything.  One of our mates thought I was just giving isla a really long cuddle, until his wife pointed out i was feeding her.  He was traumatised that he hadnt noticed as he was stroking islas cheek at the time...he thought i would be upset etc and was mortified.  I just said that if I could feed her, and he could sit there stroking her cheek and not notice then billy bonus for me.  I found that the majority of comments of yuck thats disgusting came from women...strange how that works isnt it.  My general experience is that blokes were fascinated and women were uncomfortable with it.   Anyone who wasnt happy about it, well shut your eyes then, or look somewhere else!!

I am appauled! I breastfed my son for 11 months and I didnt worry about other people. I was discrete but would breastfeed anywhere! I never had a complaint and on a number of occasions people (both male and female) congratulated me of feeding my son in public and not feeling ashamed.

I think its awful that in some places women are made to feel uncomfortable for doing something so natural. I am so glad I dont live over there and I hope that this view changes soon.

Amy - Good luck with breastfeeding your new lo. We will be here to give you all the help and support we can!

I was starring at this cover for ages trying to work out what you meant Sam...I was looking for something negative, then eventually scrolled down and read the comments. I was gobsmacked, BF is so natural and to want to hide it well Im speechless. I personnaly didnt breast feed because i was in too much panic that I would be bad at it or he wouldnt get enough etc etc and in the end it was agreed he would be better on the bottle, but i really admire all the mothers that do BF and more public acceptance should be made...starting with the US it looks like xxxx

I would have love to have breast feed my daughter, I was only able to do it for 5 days and to be honest it was the hardest decision i ever had to make when i had to give it up. It's NATURAL to breast feed how could it be seen as any thing else ??
